Teddy McFarland tossed a complete game on the mound Thursday afternoon to pick up the win, as Central Maine Community College knocked off top seed Southern Maine Community College 5-2 in the Yankee Small College Conference baseball playoff semifinals at Old Orchard Beach. The win secured a spot in the championship round on Saturday for the Mustangs, who will have the upperhand being in the winners bracket.
CMCC (25-13) got all they needed with three runs in the second inning, with two coming in to score on a ball hit by Garren Post (Westbrook) to SMCC rightfielder Aaron Whitman that went as a two-run error. McFarland was able to keep the Seawolves offense in check finishing his 7.0 inning complete game effort on the hill with two runs allowed on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Lee Robertson had three hits, while Cody Cleaveland (Lincoln Academy) added two for the Mustangs. Tyler Herkalo and Alex Bean (Westbrook) had a RBI each in the loss for SMCC, with Max Noto suffering the pitching defeat in giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 5.1 innings.
SMCC (23-12) also advances into the championship round, as they beat York County Community College 8-5 in an elimination game Thursday night. Game 1 of the championship is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. CMCC needs one win to secure the title. If the Seawolves win the first game, a second game would follow at 1:45 p.m. to decide the champion.
