The #4 seeded Southern Maine Community College Seawolves took a decisive second game in the championship round of the USCAA Softball World Series on Thursday, and won their first small college title in school history by defeating Florida National University 10-0 in Dubois, Pennsylvania.
The Conquistadors forced a second winner take all game by taking the opener of the championship round 4-0. It snapped a 23 game win streak for the Seawolves. Five different players had one hit a piece in the defeat for SMCC, and Sarah Wilkins took the loss in the circle allowing four runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Brunella Beteta (11-14) pitched a complete game shutout for Florida National not walking anyone and striking out two.
In the decisive second game, Delanie Perry provided a third inning two-run single that gave SMCC all they needed in winning their first championship in school history in just their second World Series appearance. Perry had three hits and four RBI, Cameron Crerar had three hits, while Courtney Frohaug and Emily Hutchins (Kennebunk) both added two RBI. Wilkins (16-5) redeemed herself after a tough game one loss by tossing another complete game in the circle giving up just two hits while walking one and striking out one. Sophie White (11-11) suffered the pitching loss for #2 seed Florida National, as she was tagged for seven runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings. The Conquistadors wind up at 27-29. The Seawolves, who appeared in their first World Series last season, finish a memorable year ending up with a record of 32-7 and winning 24 of their final 25 games.
