Machias baseball slips past Sumner in regular season finale

The Machias baseball team only managed two hits on Wednesday, but would get past Sumner 2-1 in the regular season finale for both teams in a game played in Machias.

The Bulldogs plated two in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run error, and that is all they ended up needing. The Tigers got one back in the top of the third when Ian Gatcomb came across to score when they threw down to try to catch Shawn Green stealing second base. Green was thrown out at third in trying to take another base. Sumner only had two baserunners from that point forward in ending their regular season with a record of 3-11 (currently #11 in Class C North).

Gatcomb reached base twice with a hit, a walk, and scored a run. Cole Faulkingham allowed two runs (none earned) on two hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings on the mound. Brady Ferguson had a hit and a run scored for Machias, while Blake Bridges had the other hit. Nick Hennessey fired a complete game on the hill giving up one run on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. The Bulldogs (9-5) appear to have locked up the #5 seed in the Class D North playoffs.
