BANGOR- The Bangor Babes used a four run third inning on Sunday afternoon in picking up their second straight Greater Northeast Collegiate Baseball League win with an 11-6 victory over the South Portland Puffins at the Winkin Complex.
South Portland (0-2) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by Parker Coleman and Tanner Evans, along with a sacrifice fly from Grady Hotham. Bangor tied it in their half of the frame highlighted by a two-run triple by Noah Simpson. The Babes then used that four run third inning to take over the lead for good. Chris Gaudio was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Brendan Mahaney had a RBI groundout, Ayden Hogan hit it a sacrifice RBI flyout to right field, and Jonah Baude chipped in a RBI single.
Simpson led the Bangor offense in the win with a single, double, and a triple while also knocking in three runs and scoring twice. Hogan and TJ Llerena also added two hits a piece. Llerena, Logan Keller, and Jackson Lizzotte all scored twice as well. Mt. View and Husson University product Noah Hurd was fantastic for a third straight game in registering his first career GNCBL win on the mound, firing 3.0 scoreless relief innings not allowing a hit with one walk and five strikeouts. Hurd has worked 6.2 innings so far on the season and hasn’t allowed a run, while giving up just two hits with nine strikeouts and one walk. Hotham drove in two runs for South Portland, while Andrew Keniston suffered the pitching loss allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 3.0 innings.
The Bangor Babes (2-1) will be home again on Thursday night when they host the Augusta Surgin’ Sturgeon for a second time with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. Augusta defeated Bangor 3-2 in the season opener on June 1st at the Winkin Complex.
