McCollett homerun leads Orono softball over WA in a Class C quarterfinal

Brooke McCollett hit a game winning two out three-run homerun in the fourth inning on Thursday afternoon, as #5 Orono knocked off #4 Washington Academy 4-2 in a Class C softball quarterfinal played in East Machias.

The Red Riots set up the homerun when Abby Haney was hit by a pitch and Madison Sinclair walked with two outs in that fourth inning. The Raiders did cut it to 3-2 in the last half of that frame on a pair of errors, but the visitors tacked on another one in the fifth on a RBI triple by Jillian Severance and hung on from there. Severance also pitched a complete game in the circle allowing two runs (none earned) on four hits with one walk and 14 strikeouts. Lily Hennessey reached base twice for Washington Academy with a hit and a walk and also scored a run. Bella Cirone also went the distance in the circle giving up four runs on just two hits with four walks and 17 strikeouts. The Raiders end their season with a record of 11-6. Orono, now 10-7, will travel to Bucksport to take on the top seeded Golden Bucks on Saturday in the semifinals with a time to be announced.
