Hermon scored two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth on Saturday afternoon, and then held on to knock off top seed Cony 4-3 in a Class B baseball semifinal game played in Augusta.
The Hawks went up 2-0 in that second inning on a two-run error on a ball hit by Tommy Meserve, and would then extend their advantage to 4-0 in the fourth on RBI singles by Meserve and Edgar Leclerc. The Rams cut it to one in the fifth when Anderson Noyes walked with the bases loaded, and then two more runs came across to score on a ball hit by Trent Hayward that was ruled an error. Cony had the tying and game winning run in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Jack Spellman would flyout to centerfielder Sam Hopkins to end it sending Hermon into the regional championship game.
Meserve and Leclerc both had a hit and a RBI in the win for the Hawks. Mason Kinney fired a complete game on the mound on 109 pitches (70 for strikes) allowing three runs with just one earned on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Hayward had a hit and was also credited with two RBI for the Rams. Max Tibbetts took the pitching loss giving up four runs (none earned) on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. #1 Cony ends their season with a record of 15-3. #5 Hermon, now 11-7, will face second seeded Ellsworth in the Class B Northern Maine Regional Championship game at Mahaney Diamond in Orono on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
