Greely shocks Ellsworth with late rally, winning their first Class B Baseball Title in 10 years

Greely shocked Ellsworth on Saturday afternoon, scoring five times with two outs in the top of the seventh inning in a thrilling 6-5 come from behind victory in the Class B Baseball State Championship game at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

The Eagles had built a 5-1 lead through six innings with three of those runs coming off the bat of Dawson Curtis who had provided a RBI single and a two-run double. The Rangers (17-3) began their comeback in the top of the seventh when Luke Piper led off and was hit by a pitch, but Ellsworth looked to still be in good shape when they would retire the next two hitters. Wyatt Soucie then drew a walk, Owen Piesik drove in a run with a single, and Greely kept their rally alive by eventually tying it on a two-run single by Kyle Soucie. Freshman Sawyer Boudle then entered the game as a pinch runner for Kyle Soucie, and would get caught on a pickoff play between first and second and got into a rundown. Bouldle did a great job by staying in that rundown long enough to allow the game winning run to round second and third and come across the plate to score before he was tagged out.

Curtis had two hits and three RBI for Ellsworth, while Jackson Barry also had two hits and drove in two. Curtis also suffered the pitching loss in relief. Brayden King went 6.2 innings in his no decision allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. The Eagles, who were seeking their second state championship in four years, end up with a record of 14-6. Kyle Soucie was the offensive leader for Greely with three hits and three RBI. Sylas Almy picked up the win on the hill in relief giving up two runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 2.1 innings. The Rangers win the title for a seventh time in school history, capturing their first Class B crown since 2015.
