Maine women’s soccer shutout in season opener by URI

Lauren MacDonald scored a game winning goal just over seven minutes into the second half on Sunday afternoon, as Rhode Island spoiled the season opener for Maine women’s soccer with a 2-0 non-conference win at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. The loss also snaps a 27-game home unbeaten streak, which began in 2021 with a 1-1 tie vs Hartford.

The winner by MacDonald at the 52:08 mark was assisted by Kaia Rice and Jill Rosenfeld, as the Rams improved to 2-0. McKenna Sylvester added an unassisted goal in the 74th minute of play. Dani Eden stopped all four shots she faced in the URI net to pick up the shutout. Abbey Thornton, Meghan Bernetti, and Emma Nicholson led Maine with two attempted shots and one on goal each. Grace Wilson made two saves. The Black Bears will host Boston University next Sunday, August 24th at 12 p.m.
