The University of Maine dominated in shots on Sunday afternoon, and got a first half goal from Julie Lossuis to pick up a 1-0 America East women’s soccer win over Albany at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in New York. It was the conference opener for both teams.
The game winner by Lossius came unassisted at the six minute mark of the opening half. A ball came to the front of the net, that was chested away by a defender who tried to get control, but lost it to Lossius. The captain Lossius got just enough of it with her right foot to get it past Albany goalie Claudia Volino into the right corner. The attempted shots were 21-4 Black Bears (9-1 on goal). Elena Barenberg picked up the shutout in net for Maine in stopping the one shot she faced. Volino made eight stops in the loss, as the Great Danes fall to 1-6-2 (0-1 in America East).
Maine improves to 2-4-1 overall (1-0 in America East). Their next game will be on Thursday, October 2nd at 6 p.m. as they unveil their new field the New Balance Track and Field and Soccer Complex in Orono in the home conference opener vs Bryant University.
