At Howland on Tuesday, senior Lauren Veino finished a pair of goals from two Lila Cummings corner kicks to help propel PVHS girls soccer over the Mattanawcook Academy Lady Lynx 4-0.
Both goals from Veino came in the first half. She redirected one of the corner kicks off her body for a score, while the other came off her foot. It was first two goals of the season for Veino, and for Cummings it was assist number 63 and 64 in her career.
For a while in the second half the soccer game almost became a secondary event, as a thick fog started rolling across the field. The third goal for PVHS started with a fast attack up the right sideline by Rylee Moulton. As she got near the endline, she drew defenders out and sent a cross in the box to Charlotte Brochu. Brochu collected and fired a shot that deflected off the incoming defender and went into the net. The final tally was set up by Brochu as she drew a penalty in the box and awarded the Lady Howlers a PK. The attempt by Moulton was initially saved by Kalista Lazo, but the ball bounced back toward Moulton as she sent the rebound into the corner for a goal for a 4-0 lead. It was 96th career goal for Moulton.
Goalkeeper Brooklynn Raymond and defenders Eve McNally, Baileigh Leet, Abby Farley, Savannah Durost, and Emma-Leigh Mailman helped to keep Mattanawcook scoreless, notching their fourth shutout in six games. Raymond saved all eight shots she faced for the 5-1 Lady Howlers, who will travel to Schenck on Friday. Lazo stopped 11 of 18 shots for the Lady Lynx, who slip to 3-1-1 and will travel to Houlton on Thursday.
