Piper, Allen help Greely stay unbeaten with win over Foxcroft

DOVER-FOXCROFT- Luke Piper had a pair of touchdown passes, including a 17-yard game winner to Benjamin Kyles late in the third quarter Friday night in leading the Greely Rangers past the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 34-19 in a Class C football game played at Oakes Field.

Both teams started red hot offensively. Greely took the opening kickoff and went 68 yards culminating with a 48-yard touchdown run by Noah Allen. The two-point conversion pass failed. Foxcroft responded when Evan Seavey hit Simon Turzik for a 10-yard score. The extra point kick was no good and it was tied 6-6. The Rangers took the lead back with 3:21 left in the first quarter on a 4-yard run by Piper to make it 12-6. The Ponies jumped on top for the first time 13-12 early in the second when Finn Holmes on fourth and goal found the endzone with a short 1-yard scoring run. Piper had the response with his first TD throw of the game that went for 6-yards to Jackson Justice about six minutes later. FA would take a slight one point advantage into the locker room at 19-18 when Seavey handed the ball off to Turzik, who then stopped and tossed a touchdown pass to Lucas Sands who caught a deflection off the fingertips of a Greely defender. The Rangers defense took over in the second half, and would shutout the Ponies 16-0 over the final 24 minutes including a big stop to begin the third quarter to remain undefeated (5-0). The game winner in that third period to Kyles from Piper was a screen pass out in the flat, and Kyles broke several tackles on his way to pay dirt with 46.5 seconds left to give them a lead they would never relinquish. An interception of Seavey returned deep into FA territory early in the fourth led to a 4-yard TD run by Allen that capped the scoring.

Piper accounted for three of the five Greely touchdowns (two passing, one rushing), while Allen also had a big night and ran for the other two. Turzik had a receiving TD and threw for another in the loss for 3-2 Foxcroft Academy. Sands had a receiving score and also an interception on defense. Both teams are back in action next Friday night, as Foxcroft visits Hampden Academy and Greely hosts Wells.
