Maine women’s hockey wins in Alfond debut; field hockey falls on the road in America East action

The University of Maine women’s hockey team debuted the newly renovated Alfond Arena in Orono on Friday afternoon, and defeated Saint Anselm 3-0 in their home opener for their first victory of the season.

Stephanie Jacob had the game winner 6:39 into the first, as the Black Bears scored once in each period. Paige Fong and Isabelle Michaud had the other tallies. It was the first collegiate goal for Fong. Ava Stevenson added two assists, and Michaud also chipped in one. The hosts outshot the Hawks (2-2) 54-22, as Kiia Lahtinen picked up the shutout in net. Maine (1-4) will host Colgate for two games next weekend with start times at 6:30 on Friday and 4:30 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Maine Field Hockey Team dropped a 4-2 America East decision Friday afternoon to UNH in Durham.

Faye Meijer scored the eventual game winner in the third quarter for UNH (6-5, 1-1 America East). Nicole Kowalewski and Saylor Kuefler would put in the Black Bear goals. Eliose Penty and Zoe Furber had one assist each. Rozarie Mrazova made six saves in the cage, as Maine drops to 3-9 and 0-2 in conference play and will return to action next Friday afternoon at home as they take on Bryant at 3 p.m.
