Freshman Britta Denny (Camden Hills High Schoo) scored her first collegiate goal on Sunday afternoon, and it was a game winner, as the University of Maine women’s soccer team got a 2-0 America East win over UMBC at the New Balance Track & Field and Soccer Complex in Orono.
Emma Nicholson and Luise Reinwald assisted on the winner by Denny in the 67th minute. Nicholson assisted on the second Black Bears goal as well by Julie Lossius to provide the breathing room with 12 minutes left to play. Jordan Pinette also picked up an assist on the Lossius marker. Elena Barenberg made three saves in net, as the hosts outshot UMBC 8-3 (23-6 in attempts). Kalli Williams made six stops for the Retrievers, who fall to 6-7-3 and 2-4 in America East. Maine improves to 3-6-3 and 2-2-2 in conference play and will go on the road to NJIT next Saturday at 6 p.m. to battle the Highlanders.
