The Philadelphia 76ers outscored the Boston Celtics 17-7 over the final 3:47 of the fourth quarter on Wednesday night, in escaping with a 117-116 win at TD Garden in a season opener between the two clubs.
Philadelphia rookie VJ Edgecombe was phenomenal in his first taste of the NBA. Edgecombe had 34 points (5-13 three-pointers), seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Tyrese Maxey led all scorers, setting a 76ers franchise record for points scored in a season opener with 40 of them (7-9 three-pointers), while also adding six assists. Jaylen Brown and Derrick White had 25 points a piece for the Celtics. Brown contributed six rebounds and four assists, while White grabbed three boards and also dished out four assists. Payton Pritchard (16 points) had a chance for a Boston win with a contested baseline jumper but missed it long as the buzzer sounded. The C’s play in New York against the Knicks Friday night.
