The Maine men’s basketball team snapped their 11 game losing streak to open the 2025-26 season on Wednesday night, earning a 69-59 non-conference road victory over Boston University at Case Gym in Boston.
The Black Bears shot the ball well all night and never trailed in the game. Maine led by as many as 11 in the first half on a three point play by Caleb Crawford, and held a 33-24 advantage at the break. The Terriers used an 11-2 run coming out of the locker room to tie it 35-35 on a three-pointer by Sam Hughes, but a pair of free throws by Mekhi Gray 20 seconds later pushed the guests back ahead to stay. The Bears would eventually stretch that to a 16 point bulge late to capture their first win of the year. They shot 54% from the floor (62% in the second half), while also hitting 7-12 attempts from the three-point arc, and 12-15 from the free throw line.
Ben Defty was the games high scorer with 19 points and 11 rebounds in the loss for Boston University. The Terriers, out of the Patriot League, drop to 4-7. TJ Biel led Maine with 17 points and four rebounds. Logan Carey added 14 points, three assists, and two steals. Gray finished with 10 points, Keelan Steele chipped in eight points and seven rebounds, while Crawford ended up with seven points. The Black Bears (1-11) will finally return home after a six game road trip when they host Canisius on Skip Chappelle Court at Memorial Gymnasium in Orono on Saturday at 2 p.m.
