Maine women’s basketball pulls away from UNH as Smith puts in 32 points

Adrianna Smith had a game-high 32 points on Saturday afternoon, as Maine pulled away from UNH 73-51 in America East women’s basketball action at Lundholm Gym in Durham, New Hampshire.

With the Wildcats hanging around in the second quarter down just 17-14, the Black Bears would end the first half on a 14-4 run to take a 31-18 advantage into the break. 20 of those points came from Smith. Maine was on fire in the third, shooting 56% from floor (5-9 three-pointers) and going on a spurt of 23-8 to gain their biggest lead of the day at 54-26 to sew up their fourth conference victory and their 11th straight win over UNH.

Maggie Cavanaugh led UNH with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Lucia Melero chipped in 10 points. The Wildcats drop to 6-12 and 0-5 in America East. Smith was 12-23 from the field (4-4 three-pointers, 4-5 free throws), and also added nine rebounds, four assists, and one steal for Maine. Freshman guard Olivia Alvarez had a career-high 16 points, and also contributed three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Asta Blauenfeldt and Sarah Talon (Windham) would also put in eight points a piece. The Black Bears are now 9-10 and 4-2 in the conference and will stay on the road to battle Albany in New York on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m.
