Binghamton uses big fourth inning to defeat Maine in the America East Softball Tournament

#2 seed Binghamton scored nine runs in the fourth inning on Wednesday afternoon, defeating #5 Maine 12-5 in the opening round of the America East Softball Tournament at Labat Softball Complex in Orono.

Megan Wolf and Rachel Carey both provided two-run singles in that nine run bottom of the fourth inning for the Bearcats, who had scored eight of those runs before recording an out. The Black Bears had led 3-0 on a Maggie Helms RBI double in the second, and another double by Helms in the top of the fourth that drove in two. Carey led Binghamton (17-24) with two hits and four RBI including a two-run homerun. Maddy Dodig added two hits and two RBI, as part of a 13-hit attack. Kaelyn Larkin had three hits, Neve Adams had two, and Helms also had two in driving all three Maine runs. Ava Zettlemoyer, Alysen Reith, and Hannah Hipwell all pitched with Zettlemoyer (3-9) taking the defeat. The Black Bears (12-35) have lost seven consecutive games and face elimination on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. as they take on #3 Albany, who just swept three from Maine in Orono last weekend.
