The Maine baseball team is going to lose only their second America East series of the season, after their comeback attempt fell short in a 7-6 loss to UMass-Lowell at Mahaney Diamond in Orono on Saturday afternoon.
The Black Bears had an early 1-0 lead on a Shane Andrus solo homerun in the second inning, before the Riverhawks scored the next seven runs to take a 7-1 advantage. Maine (17-29, 11-9 America East) rallied within one on two-run homers by Brody Rasmussen and Quinn Murphy in the sixth and seventh, and a sacrifice RBI flyout by Albert De La Rosa in the eighth but were unable to come up with anything else from there. Sean O’Leary, Brayden Cali, and Joseph DeLanzo all had two RBI each for UMass-Lowell (18-27, 8-12). Rasmussen and Chris Bear had two hits each for the Black Bears, with Rasmussen and Murphy each driving in two. Vaun Larisa (3-4) took the pitching loss allowing six runs (none earned) on four hits with three walks and one strikeout in four innings. Pierce Friedman was solid in relief giving up just one run on four hits in five innings. Maine, who had won five straight conference series since dropping two of three games in their league openers at UMBC in late March, will try to salvage the final game of this series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
