Colby softball lost a 1-0 heartbreaker in Game 1 of a best of three NCAA Division III Super Regionals Series to host Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey on Thursday.
Sophia Meade, who only allowed one earned run in over 15 innings of relief in helping the Mules capture the Bangor Regional Championship, was great out of the starters role. The game was scoreless all the way to the bottom of the seventh inning when the Profs (41-9) took advantage of a Colby miscue. Carly Polsky led off and was hit by a pitch, and Gia DiMeglio came in as a pinch runner. After a strikeout, DiMeglio stole second base. With Sara MacNair at bat, she grounded one to second, but an errant throw allowed DiMeglio to come around and score and win it in walk-off fashion. Carissa Cassidy, Avery Lyman, and Kathryne Clay (Cape Elizabeth) had the hits for the Mules (30-13). Meade (14-4) was the tough luck loser in the circle going the distance and allowing one run (none earned) on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Colby will need to beat Rowan twice on Friday to advance to the College World Series. Game 2 of the series is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
