Cat Facchini pitched a complete game three hit shutout, and also provided the only offense on Tuesday night as Hampden Academy topped Lewiston 1-0 in the Class A North Softball Regional Championship game played at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.
It was a pitchers duel, as the Blue Devils starter Harlee Gasser also pitched magnificently in what was also a complete game effort. The Broncos produced the only run of the night in the top of the fifth inning. Aubrey Shaw led off with a single, and was sacrificed to second. After two were out and Shaw still at second, Facchini helped her cause with a RBI double to centerfield. She did the rest with her arm, only allowing one baserunner for Lewiston over their final three at bats including back to back strikeouts in the seventh inning to end it.
Shaw, Lolah Cowing, and Facchini had the hits for Hampden Academy. Facchini allowed three hits while walking two and striking out eight. Chloe Croteau, Isabella Enos, and Elsie Cloutier had the Lewiston hits. Gasser was the tough luck loser giving just the one run on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. The Blue Devils end their season with a record of 15-4. The Broncos (13-6) will play undefeated South Champion Cheverus on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the state championship game at CMCC in Auburn.
