Addison DeRoche pitched a four-hitter and struck out 15 in leading Cheverus to a 3-2 Class A softball state championship win over Hampden on Saturday afternoon at Central Maine Community College in Auburn.
Hampden had a chance in the seventh inning. Cheverus thought they had the final out at second base but an obstruction was called and the Stags had to take the field after their first celebration of the day. DeRoche struck out the next batter and the celebration was on again for the undefeated Stags. This time it lasted much longer. It is the second state championship for the Stags in the last three seasons.
Cameron Gagnon led the Stags offense with two hits. Gagnon, Abby Kelly, and Sadie Collins each had one RBI.
Cat Facchini allowed three runs on eight hits and four walks, with two strikeouts for the Broncos. Facchini also had two hits and one RBI. Piper Parker also had one RBI.
