Maine women’s soccer drops tough non-conference decision to Merrimack

The Maine women’s soccer team dropped a tough non-conference decision to Merrimack College 2-1 on Thursday night at the New Balance Soccer Complex in Orono.

The Warriors struck first in the 34th minute. The Black Bears, who had a 16-9 edge in shots attempted (7-5 on goal), fought back and finally evened the match in the 87th minute when Audrey Palmer notched her first collegiate goal on an assist from Britta Denny. Merrimack though would pick up the game winner when Gabrielle Geloso trickled one home past goalie Elena Barenberg with just 33 seconds left to secure her teams first win of the season (1-2-1). Barenberg made three saves in the defeat for Maine (1-3). The Black Bears will head out on the road this weekend to take on Colgate in New York on Sunday at 1 p.m.
