OLD TOWN- The Old Town High School Coyotes scored the final 44 points of their home opener on Friday night, and cruised past Mt. Ararat 44-8 in a large school 8-man football contest at Victory Field.
The visiting Eagles struck first on the opening possession. They would keep the ball by successfully converting on three fourth down situations. Abel Lajoie capped the 9:20 drive by scoring on a 1-yard run. It didn’t take long for the Coyotes to answer, as their top playmaker Ethan Closson took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the endzone for a touchdown. With both teams both running in a 2-point conversion it was 8-8. Old Town turned the game in their favor late in the second quarter, as Tommy King had two interceptions. After the first one, the hosts went ahead for good on a 12-yard TD pass from Closson to Brandon Schanz with 1:11 left. Closson helped to set that up with a 36-yard scramble run. On the second play after the second interception by King, Closson dumped off a short pass to Schanz. Schanz turned it up the sideline and took it all the way for a 66-yard score to extend the advantage to 22-8 with 32 seconds remaining, which was the same score at the halftime break. The Old Town senior quarterback Closson finished off his big night with a 54-yard touchdown run on the first possession of the second half. Brady Davis came in to play quarterback for the Coyotes in the fourth quarter, and would connect with King on a 25-yard scoring pass. Logan Meservey would also score on a short run in the final period as the Coyotes stayed unbeaten.
Closson was a part of four of the six touchdowns in the win (kickoff return TD, two passing TDs, 1 rushing TD). He was also successful on a pair of 2-point conversions (one rush, one pass). Next up, Mt. Ararat (0-3) will host Spruce Mountain in their homecoming game next Friday night at 7 p.m. In a battle of large school and small school 8-man contenders, Old Town (3-0) will host Old Orchard Beach (3-0) on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
