ORONO- St. Lawrence University got a game winning first period goal from Brooke Mulvihill, and a 32-save shutout performance from Maja Helge on Friday afternoon in a 3-0 victory over Maine to split their weekend non-conference women’s hockey series at Alfond Arena.
The Saints winner by Mulvihill was scored at 7:12 of the opening period on an assist from Cheyenne Degeer. The Black Bears had plenty of shots and opportunities, but also went 0-4 on their powerplay chances (now 1-17 in their first four games). Mae Severn added a goal in the second for the visitors. Maine thought they had cut it to 2-1 when Isabelle Michaud knocked home a rebound after a pileup in the crease with 8:33 left in the third period, but after St. Lawrence called for a review the goal was waved off for goaltender interference. Jaylee Mackinnon would finish the scoring into an empty net with 2:47 remaining, as the Saints picked up their first win (1-3). Helge stood tall especially in the second, making 13 of her 32 saves in that stanza when her team was outshot 13-4. Sade Sandilands and Lulu Rucinski led the Black Bears in shots on goal with four a piece, while Mikayla Boarder and Kendall Sundby added three each. Kiia Lahtinen made 21 saves. Maine (1-3) will travel to Minneapolis next weekend to compete in the East/West Showcase being hosted by the University of Minnesota. They’ll face the Golden Gophers on Friday night, and Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon.
