Wells rallies late to trip up Freeport in a crossover football matchup

In what turned out to be the game of the night on Thursday in high school football, Wells rallied late to defeat Freeport 28-24 in a contest played at Warrior Field in Wells.

There were 28 points scored in the fourth quarter. The Falcons of Freeport (4-2) scored the first two touchdowns of the final period taking a 24-14 advantage with 5:50 left. Wells (4-2) struck right back with 2:46 to go with a touchdown of their own to cut it to 24-20. They would then squib an onside kick that took a perfect bounce in the middle of the field straight up into the air, and the Warriors would be there to leap on it and recover. The hosts took advantage as they scored on a 7-yard passing TD to take over the lead for good with 46 seconds remaining, and also tacked on what turned out to be a huge two-point conversion. A good kickoff return by Freeport took the ball all the way to the Wells 38, and they would drive it to the 11 in the final seconds. An incomplete pass on the final play would allow the Warriors to take the victory as their two-point conversion proved to be a key moment as Freeport had to go for the endzone to try to win it. The Falcons, who came into the week in first place in Class D South, will play again next Friday at Dirigo. The Warriors, out of Class C, will be at York next Saturday.
