Central girls basketball turn up the defense in win over Dexter

EAST CORINTH- The Central Red Devils girls basketball team went on a 20-0 second half run and rolled to a 36-18 victory over Dexter at Central high school on Monday night.

Emma Campbell sparked the Central defense that forced 30 turnovers. Campbell grabbed 10 steals for a Red Devils team that had 17 steals. Campbell also recorded six points, five rebounds, and three steals.

The Tigers held a halftime lead despite having trouble against the Central pressure and shooting 2-9 from the free throw line in the half.

Dexter jumped out to a 13-10 lead when Rebecca Batron put in a layup early in the second half. The Red Devils took over from that point, going on their 20-0 that extended into the fourth quarter. Central had six different players that scored during their run.

Libby Cook led the Red Devils with a game high 10 points. Cook also grabbed six rebounds and three steals. Emily Smith scored eight points, including going 4-4 from the free throw line. Smith also had the assignment of slowing down Tigers leading scorer Megan Peach. Smith helped hold Peach to only two field goals and eight points.

Sydney Allen recorded six points, four steals, four assists, and three rebounds. Emily Cohen scored four third quarter points and grabbed four rebounds. Abi Allen scored two points and had two assists.

Peach grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked seven shots, and dished out two assists for the Tigers. Batron scored four points and grabbed three rebounds. Kaitlyn Webber, Kaylee Deering, and Kayli Cunningham finished with two points each.

The Tigers shot 6-17 from the free throw line, while the Red Devils shot 6-7 from the line. Central (3-0) will travel to Orono on Thursday night. Dexter (2-1) will host PVHS on Wednesday night.
