Dominic Cyr leads Fort Kent past Orono in Class C boys soccer regional championship game

HAMPDEN- Dominic Cyr scored two goals, including the game winning penalty kick in overtime on Tuesday evening in leading Fort Kent boys soccer to a 2-1 win over top seed Orono in the Class C Northern Maine Championship game played at Hampden Academy. The Warriors claim their first regional title since they won back to back Northern crowns in 2021 and 2022.

Gabe Lule gave Orono (14-2-1) their only lead, as he scored on a direct kick just four seconds after Fort Kent was given a yellow card to give the Red Riots a 1-0 advantage with 22:29 left in the first half. The Red Riots had several chances to extend their lead but couldn’t do so, as Kyle Paradis came up with some huge saves for FK. A hustle play by Cyr tied the score for the Warriors with 16:09 left in regulation, and he beat a defender to the ball and put it into the back of the net from just outside the box. As the game moved into overtime, the ball came to Cyr near the side of the Orono net very early in the extra session. Cyr tried to cut back into the box but was tripped, forcing the referee to blow his whistle for a penalty kick. Cyr made a slow approach to the ball on the attempt, sizzling a shot past Red Riots goalie Moritz Wutzler into the upper left corner to end it just 26 seconds into the overtime period. Fort Kent (10-6-1), who has lost in their last four appearances in the state title game, will look for their first state championship since 2010 when they face two-time defending champ Hall-Dale at Lewiston High School on Saturday, November 7 at 11 a.m.
