University of Maine Sports Roundup for Saturday 1/14

A busy Saturday afternoon of sports for the Maine Black Bears. The mens and womens basketball teams were both in action against Stony Brook, while the hockey team was at Fenway Park taking on Connecticut.

 

 

In the womens basketball game at Stony Brook, New York, the Black Bears only scored ten second half points in dropping a 55-41 decision to the Seawolves.

Sigi Koizar did not start but came off the bench and scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds in 28 minutes, in returning from injury that forced her to miss three straight games.

Naira Caceres led the Bears with 11 points and eight rebounds. Tanesha Sutton scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds, as Maine fell to 9-10 overall and 2-2 in America East. Maine shot just 3-19 from the floor in the second half and 0-11 from the three point arc, after holding a slim 31-28 halftime lead. The Bears only shot 33 percent in the game.

Kori Bayne-Walker led Stony Brook (8-8, 1-2 AE) with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

Maine returns home to host Hartford on Monday at 1 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPN 3.

 

 

In the mens contest at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, the Stony Brook Seawolves outscored Maine 46-23 in the second half to take a 74-54 victory.

Wes Myers was once again the Black Bears high scorer. Myers had 18 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Vincent Eze had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Maine falls to 5-14 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Maine kept it close for most of the game and led by three at halftime, but Stony Brook used a 23-0 run late in the second half to break the game open.

Lucas Woodhouse led Stony Brook with 20 points, seven assists, and two steals. Tyrell Sturdivant also had 16 points and six rebounds. The Seawolves go to 8-8 overall and 3-0 in America East.

Maine will travel to Hartford Monday from a 1 p.m. tipoff with the Hawks.

 

 

Blaine Byron and Cam Brown both had a goal and an assist to lead the Maine Black Bears hockey team to a 4-0 Hockey East win over Connecticut at Frozen Fenway.

Rob McGovern stopped all 31 shots he faced in earning his first career shutout.

Nolan Vesey and Rob Michel also scored for the Black Bears as they earned just their second league win of the season.

Adam Huska took the loss in the Huskies cage with 40 saves on 44 shots.

Maine is now 8-11-3 overall and 2-7-1 in Hockey East. Connecticut drops to 9-8-6 and 5-4-2.

Maine will play a home and home series next weekend against Boston University. The Friday night game will be at Agannis Arena in Boston, while the Saturday night game will be in Orono at the Alfond. Puck drop for both nights is 7:30 p.m.
