Maine Womens BB picks up second conference road win of season

Maine interim coach Amy Vachon led her Black Bears into Hartford Monday night searching for just their second road conference win of the year. 

 

Laia Sole, Julie Brousseau, and Blanca Millan combined to score 50 points Monday, to help lead the Maine Black Bears womens basketball team to a 66-60 America East win over Hartford at West Hartford, Connecticut.

A back and forth tight first half saw 12 lead changes, with Maine taking a slim 33-32 halftime advantage.

The Black Bears began to pull away from the Hawks in the third quarter of play, outscoring the hosts 21-10 to take what was the games biggest margin at 54-42 headed into the final 10 minutes.

Hartford (14-9, 5-5 America East), started the fourth on a quick 8-0 run to cut the lead to four at 54-50. The Hawks got as close as two points, but Maine was able to knock down clutch foul shots down the stretch to pick up just their second road conference win of the year (2-5).

Sole led the way for Maine (13-13, 6-5), with 19 points, seven rebounds, and two assists. Brousseau had 17 points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal. Millan finished with 14 points, three rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one blocked shot. Brousseau (4-9) and Millan (3-5) combined to shot 7-14 from the three point arc.

Hartford was led by Jannelle Harrison who had 13 points, six rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Sierra Decosta had 12 points and three steals. Lindsey Abed and Darby Lee also chipped in 10 points a piece.

Neither team shot well from the foul line, as Maine was 10-22 and Hartford was 11-20.

Maine returns home to the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Thursday night when they welcome in UMass-Lowell for a 7 p.m. tip.
