The Brewer Witches topped Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach/Massabesic co-op 3-1 in a high school boys hockey contest played at Biddeford Ice Arena on Saturday evening. It was the season opener for Brewer.
Freshman Landon Baker got his first career varsity goal for Brewer, while senior Zach Lindquist put in two. It was also the first two goals ever scored for Lindquist. Ethan Blaine had two assists, while James Armenia, Eddie Goff, and Kane Cookson-Goodridge had one assist each. Calvin Grass made 24 saves in net for the Witches.
Biddeford (0-2) returns to action on the road at Kennebunk on Wednesday night at 6:30, while Brewer (1-0) will also play Wednesday when they take on John Bapst in their home opener at 8:30 p.m.
Late second period surge sends Bangor past Brewer at Fill the Alfond
ORONO- The Bangor Rams got two goals in the final 2:19 of the second period, including a game winner by Will Pelc to defeat the Brewer Witches 6-2 in the annual Fill the Alfond boys high school hockey rivalry matchup at the University of Maine Friday night.
Brewer scored first on a beautiful rush by James Armenia on the powerplay, with a backhander that beat Bangor goalie Cody McCue at 11:20 of the opening period. The Rams tied it just under three minutes later when Marc-Andre Perron scooped up a rebound of a Ryan Beck shot and slipped it past Witches netminder Calvin Grass at 14:08. Perron gave Bangor the lead for the first time with his second of the night 3:01 into the second period, before another successful Brewer powerplay tied it at 8:27 on a tip-in by Baylon Cram. The Rams took over from there. At the very end of their powerplay, Pelc fired one home unassisted at 12:41 on a play started by Perron. Perron added another point to his evening when he picked up an assist on Chase Caron goal that made it 4-2 at 14:26. Bangor got a shorthanded marker from Phillip Moscone, and a powerplay goal from Andrew Slocum in the third period to end the scoring.
Eight different players registered points for Bangor, who improves to 2-2 on the season. Perron had two goals and one assist to lead the way. Moscone, Caron, and Slocum all had one goal and one assist. Chase Karam had two assists, while Pelc had one goal and Beck along with Zachary Cota had one assist each. McCue picked up the victory in net, and Miles Worcester played the final 3:34 of game action. Grass took the loss in the cage for the 1-4 Witches, while Joshua Hitchings registered one assist. The Rams and Witches both return to action on New Year's Day Wednesday, January 1 as Bangor travels to Edward Little at 4:10 p.m. and the Witches host Hampden Academy at 6:10.
