#2 seed Central Maine Community College challenged, but Lavigne helps the Mustangs get past #7 Cincinnati-Clermont in a first round game of the USCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament
Ella Lavigne had 34 points, and the Central Maine Community College Mustangs rallied from a six point fourth quarter deficit on Wednesday evening by scoring the final nine points of the game in knocking off the University of Cincinnati-Clermont (Ohio) 67-62 in a first round game of the USCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament at Villa Maria College in Buffalo, New York.
CMCC got off to a rough start, as Cincinnati-Clermont tallied the first eight points. The Mustangs didn't score until there was 3:46 left in the first quarter, and trailed 15-11 after the opening 10 minutes. They would take their first lead at 17-15 with a 6-0 run to start the second on two free throws by Lavigne, and would build that advantage to eight in taking a 32-26 lead to the halftime break. The Cougars fought back in front in the third quarter on a jumper by Tamira Scott, and would outscore the Mustangs 20-13 in the period to take a 46-45 lead into the fourth. With the score tied 50-50, Cincinnati-Clermont used an 8-2 spurt to move ahead 58-52 capped off by a three-pointer by Olivia Crawford with 5:31 left to play. Two layups by Lavigne and a jumper by Chantel Ouellette (Edward Little) tied it right back up for CMCC, but the Cougars answered that with four straight on layups by Tyra Murphy and Crawford but then wouldn't score again over the final 2:48. With the Mustangs trailing 62-61, Lavigne put them ahead for good with another layup off a feed from Ouellette with 18 seconds remaining. Lavigne then stole the inbounds pass and made a layup while getting fouled. She missed the free throw giving Cincinnati-Clermont one more chance down by three. Crawford missed a tying three-pointer in the final seconds, and Riley Hebler (Sanford) iced it on the other end with two free throws to send her team to the semifinals on Friday.
Lavigne shot 14-29 from the field and added five rebounds and two steals to her game-high point total in the win for CMCC. Autumn Peterson (Narraguagus) contributed eight points off the Mustangs bench. Rosa Prieto chipped in six points, while Ouellette finished with five points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Murphy led Cincinnati-Clermont in the loss with 18 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, six assists, and a blocked shot. Crawford ended up with 15 points, while Scott had 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Cougars (13-12) will play in a consolation game on Thursday against either Christendom College or Penn St. Shenango. The Mustangs (29-1) play #3 Miami Hamilton (18-10) also out of Ohio on Friday at 3:15 in the semis. CMCC is the only team from Maine to ever win a USCAA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship, as they have three of them with the last one coming in the 2021-2022 season.
