#1 Bowdoin College gets past SUNY Cortland Saturday night in Brunswick in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 for a second straight season

Sydney Jones led four players in double figures with 18 points Saturday night, as #1 nationally ranked Bowdoin College used a strong fourth quarter to pull away for a 67-54 win over SUNY Cortland in a second round game of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament at Morrell Gymnasium in Brunswick. The victory secures a second straight trip to the Sweet 16 for the Polar Bears.

It was very tightly contested throughout, as both teams held a lead over the first three quarters. 12 first half points from Jones had Bowdoin holding a 28-26 halftime edge. Cortland took their final lead on two free throws by Joleen Lusk 42-40 with 2:26 left in the third quarter, but the game would go to the fourth tied at 44-44. A three-pointer by Maria Belardi 34 seconds into the final period would give the Polar Bears the advantage for good, and they would outscore the Red Dragons 23-10 over those final 10 minutes to march to their 17th Sweet 16 appearance in school history.

Jones (3-8 three-pointers) also grabbed eight rebounds to go along with her team-high point total in the win for Bowdoin. Carly Davey had 13 points and five rebounds, Grace Kinum put in 12 points, while Belardi finished with 10 points. Jackie Funk led SUNY Cortland with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Lusk ended up with 12 points and five boards. The Red Dragons had their 14 game win streak snapped in ending their season with a final record of 25-4. The Polar Bears (29-0) will take on Smith College (28-2) next Friday, March 14th in a Sweet 16 matchup. The sectional sites and game times will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday afternoon.
