The Penobscot Pioneers girls ice hockey team has started their 2024-25 season with two ties, including Wednesday afternoon at home with Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland/Monmouth co-op at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer.

Ella Davis and Cayleigh Coleman both had a hat trick Wednesday evening, as the Penobscot Pioneers won their first game of the 2024-25 season by topping Winslow/Gardiner/Cony co-op.

Penobscot Pioneers notch second straight win

The Penobscot Pioneers high school girls ice hockey team won their second game in a row Monday night with a 6-2 victory over Winslow/Gardiner co-op at the Thomas College Ice Vault in Waterville.

Delaney Carr led the way with two goals and one assist for Penobscot. Izzy Brideau (one goal, one assist) and Olivia Veves (two assists) also had multiple points. Cayleigh Coleman, Jess Sass, and Bella Saucier each had one goal. Alyse Sapiel, Lily Rand, and Ashlyn Dearborn also chipped one assist a piece. Mariah Coon got the win in net for the Pioneers, who improve to 3-2-2 on the season with two of their wins so far over the Black Tigers. Winslow/Gardiner falls to 2-5.

Penobscot will kick off the annual Fill the Alfond event on Friday night at Alfond Arena on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono when they take on Yarmouth/Freeport co-op at 5:30 p.m., followed by Bangor vs Brewer boys ice hockey at approximately 7:30.

Yarmouth/Freeport pulls away from Penobscot at Fill the Alfond

ORONO- The Yarmouth/Freeport girls ice hockey team got two goals from Adelaide Strout, and a second period game winning tally by Emma White in powering past the Penobscot Pioneers 5-1 in the Fill the Alfond event at the University of Maine on Friday evening. 

Penobscot (3-3-2), who was looking to extend their win streak to three games, got on the board first and for the only time at 10:39 of the opening period on a goal from Cayleigh Coleman on assists from Izzy Brideau and Ella Davis. Yarmouth/Freeport responded just 1:12 later as Strout scored her first of the game at 11:51. The Clippers took over from there, outshooting the Pioneers 18-3 in the second and getting the game winner from White at 2:16. Strout added her second at 8:00. Maya Nasveschuk and Celia Zinman capped off the scoring by tallying in the third period helping their team improve to 5-1-1.

Abbie Derosier took the loss in goal for Penobscot, while Mariah Coon played the final 4:20 of game action. Along with the two goals by Strout, Zinman also had one goal and one assist for Yarmouth/Freeport. Drea Rideout had two assists, while White and Nasveschuk had one goal each. Lexie Wiles got the victory in net. Both teams went 0-2 on the powerplay. The Clippers return to action on Tuesday, December 31 when they host Edward Little/Leavitt co-op at 4 p.m., while the Pioneers host St. Dom's on Wednesday, January 1 at 3 p.m.

Penobscot scores four times in the third period to knock off Lewiston in a girls hockey quarterfinal 

Izzy Brideau scored twice in the third period including the game winner on Wednesday evening, and Jordin Williams added a goal and an assist as the Penobscot Pioneers defeated Lewiston/Oak Hill/Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon co-op 4-1 in a Class A North girls hockey quarterfinal playoff game played at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer.

Lewiston struck first late in the second period, as Avaya Desjardins coming out of the penalty box scored a breakaway goal with 25.7 seconds left to make it 1-0 Blue Devils. Williams tied it for Penobscot 1:27 into the third unassisted with a fluttering shot that went in off the shoulder of goaltender Riley Walters from the right circle. Brideau notched the game winner on a shot from the high slot off assists from Ashlynn Dearborn and Williams at 3:52. She scored again on a partial breakaway glove side on Walters at 10:14, and Cayleigh Coleman added a late tally with 1:42 left to play to help the #4 Pioneers advance.

Abby Derosier got the win in net for Penobscot. #5 Lewiston ends their season with a record of 10-9. The Pioneers (8-9-2) will play in the North semifinals at either 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Ice Vault in Hallowell against top seed Yarmouth/Freeport.
