Girls Soccer - Penquis 7 Hodgdon 6- September 6th, 2024

The Penquis girls began their Northern Maine title defense on the road at Hodgdon. Half way through the first, Penquis found themselves trailing 3-0. Not long after, Violet Chai broke down the wing and crossed it in the box for Lauren Veino to tap it in the back side. Veino would add another a couple minutes later to bring Penquis within one. Hodgdon would then add another to go up 4-2, but soon committed a foul in the box and Chai placed the ball in the corner to bring the Patriots back within one going into the half. Penquis made the correct adjustments at half and Chai buried the equalizer a few minutes into the second half. Venio would then complete the hat trick 5 minutes later, before getting her fourth goal of the game redirecting an Ashley Ladd free kick from just outside the 18. Venio would then tap in her fifth goal of the game to put the Patriots at 7, and Penquis would survive a late onslaught from the Hawks to hold onto the 7-6 victory and begin the year 1-0 and next face Penobscot Christian on Monday for the home opener.

final stats for Penquis:
Lauren Veino: 5 shots, 5 goals
Violet Chai: 6 shots, 2 goals, and 1 assist
Ashley Ladd: 1 assist
Brooklyn Decker: 20 saves

At Howland Monday, Penobscot Valley jumped out to a two goal lead in the first 3 minutes and never looked back, defeating Houlton 6-1.

Freshman Abby Castonguay recorded her first varsity goal to get PVHS going, from an Ellie Austin pass just 2:08 in.  Thirty-three seconds later, Austin sent a cross in the box to Lila Cummings, who passed to Tiana Grant.  Grant finished her shot past goalie Allie Worthley for her first career varsity goal.  The Lady Howlers would add two more before the half, both by Junior Cummings, who blasted two goals from beyond the 18-yard-line into the net.

In the second half, Houlton struck first as Greta Kenney finished off a Keitony Skepple cross to make it 4-1.  Penobscot Valley responded however, first with a goal by Rylee Moulton (assist from Eve McNally), then Cummings completed the hat trick when she tallied home a drop pass from Moulton into the corner of the net.

Brooklynn Raymond saved six of fifteen shots for PVHS, who are now 1-0 on the season.  They will travel to Fort Kent on Saturday.

Worthley and Skepple combined to save 7 of 23 shots for Houlton, who dropped to 1-1.  They will host Orono on Friday

Lady Howlers edge Red Riots 2-1

In Howland under the lights Friday night, Rylee Moulton scored with just over 15 minutes left in the game to help propel Penobscot Valley to a 2-1 win.

Orono got off to a hot start, taking an early 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest. Nina Mitchell collected the ball outside the 18 and fired a high shot over the head of PVHS goalkeeper Brooklynn Raymond that nailed the crossbar. The rebound was first touched by Addison Duran who knocked it in the net.

The Howlers responded 20 minutes later on a play that started with Ellie Austin attacking the endline and putting a low pass across the box and past the keeper. Senior Tiana Grant one-touched the ball into the open net to knot it up at 1-1.

The game winning goal started with a direct kick near the sideline by Lila Cummings.  Cummings kicked a low liner into the box to Moulton, who made a quick move to create space and score past keeper Finley Sanders.

With the win, PVHS improved to 2-2 on the season and will host Mattanawcook Academy on Monday. Raymond saved 11 of 13 shots.

Orono drops to 2-2-1 and travels to Bucksport Thursday. Sanders stopped 13 shots on 21 attempts.

Hat trick by Moulton propels Lady Howlers by the Lynx

At Howland Monday night, a scoreless game with under 14 minutes left quickly turned into a 3-0 PVHS advantage and win.

All three goals came off the foot of junior striker Rylee Moulton, and all within a 10 minute span.

Neither team could get on the board early, even with a large amount of shots coming from both sides. In the first half alone, Penobscot Valley goalie Brooklynn Raymond prevented 11 shots from entering the net, while Lily Wotton for Mattanawcook saw 17 shots come her way.

With 13:17 to play, the Lady Howlers finally found the back of the net. A drop pass from Moulton to Ellie Austin led to a lofting pass across the box. Tiana Grant attacked the airborne ball with her body, redirecting it to Moulton, who chipped a shot that deflected off the outstretched hands of Wotton and into the goal. Just 45 seconds later, Austin sent a diagonal pass up to Moulton, who shot from around the 18 yard line and buried it in the lower left corner. She completed the hat trick when a series of give and go's between her, Austin, and Lila Cummings ended with a goal in the upper left corner off a Cummings assist.

With the win, the Howlers improve to 3-2 on the season, with all five games being played against Class C teams. Raymond saved 15 of 17 shots for PVHS, who will travel to Guilford to face their first Class D opponent in PCHS Thursday evening.

Mattanawcook Academy drops to 3-3-1, and will travel to Houlton on Friday. Wotton had a very solid game in the net, facing 30 shots and saving 18 of them.

Lady Howlers knock off unbeaten Warriors on homecoming

At Howland Saturday, Penobscot Valley girls soccer celebrated their 2023 State Championship Soccer Team in between the girls and boys game, and the current girls team celebrated with a 2-0 win against previously unbeaten Fort Kent.

The two teams faced each other two weeks ago, with the Warriors prevailing 3-1.

After about 30 minutes of scoreless soccer, junior Rylee Moulton used her speed to race up the sideline with the ball, and was able to get a cross past the defender. The pass made its way across the box to senior Ellie Austin, who put it in the opposite corner past keeper Laila Forino for a 1-0 lead.

Exactly four minutes later, junior Lila Cummings received the ball near the sideline, streaked laterally toward the middle and fired a rocket into the upper left 90 of the net.

The second half saw Fort Kent control possessions at a high level, but keeper Brooklynn Raymond and defenders Allie LeBlanc, Shay Ireland, Eve McNally, Baileigh Leet, and Charlotte Brochu helped keep them off the board.

Raymond was superb in net, saving 11 of 20 shots for PVHS. The Lady Howlers improve to 4-2, and will travel to Guilford to face PCHS in a makeup game on Monday.

Forino stopped 3 of 7 shots for Fort Kent, who suffered their first defeat of the season. The 7-1 Lady Warriors travel to Houlton on Friday

Lady Howlers earn third straight shutout

At Guilford on Monday, the PVHS Lady Howlers had five different players in the scoring column as they defeated PCHS 8-0.

Rylee Moulton struck first, just 72 seconds into the game when she took a Tiana Grant pass and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net. Moulton scored again halfway through the first half, as she received a ball from Lila Cummings, went one on one with goalkeeper Braylin Beckwith and buried it into the lower right corner. The third and final goal of the first frame came from Cummings, as she crushed a low liner in the corner off a Charlotte Brochu assist.

In the second half, the Lady Howlers would score four goals in a six and a half minute span starting around the 33 minute mark. Brochu once again found Cummings just past midfield, and after a few moves past defenders Cummings drilled a low shot into the right corner. 40 seconds later, Cummings led a breakaway pass to Moulton who scored and recorded her second hat trick of the year. The next goal started with a free kick sailing to Addy Lyons in the box, who got a foot on the ball and sent it airborne toward the post where freshman Abby Castonguay headed it in. Freshman Kaylee Woodman got her first varsity goal when her own shot deflected off a post and bounced back toward her, and she calmly put it past the keeper. At around the 10-minute mark, Brochu sent a long pass past the PCHS back line to Allie LeBlanc, who kicked the ball by Beckwith to end the game.

Penobscot Valley improved to 5-2 on the year, and recorded their third straight shutout. Moulton finished with three goals, Cummings had two goals and two assists, and Brochu had three assists from the midfield. Brooklynn Raymond stopped all four shots she saw. The Lady Howlers will host Central Wednesday evening at 6:00.

Beckwith saved 9 of 24 shots for the 0-8 Lady Pirates, who will host Foxcroft Academy on Wednesday.

PVHS avenges earlier season loss in victory over Central

When the Penobscot Valley girls soccer team traveled to East Corinth two weeks ago, they left the field on the wrong side of a 1-0 score in a rare shutout loss courtesy of a Mary Allen penalty kick. In Howland Wednesday evening under the lights, the offense was clicking as they beat the Lady Red Devils 6-0.

As she often does, junior Rylee Moulton got the scoring started early. At around the five minute mark, she took a pass from Tiana Grant, went left to right along the top of the 18 yard line and buried a low shot in the left corner of the net. 10 minutes later she struck again, with a pass from Kaylee Woodman at the midfield line. Moulton made a couple of quick moves, then jolted ahead of the defenders toward the net sending another shot in the lower left corner. Lila Cummings would score the third goal, as she made a beautiful cut-back move to create separation and drilled a high shot under the crossbar for the score.

Ten minutes into the second half, Cummings struck again as her low bending corner kick wasn't able to be corralled by the keeper and snuck into the goal. Moulton would complete the hat trick as she used pure determination to track down a deflected ball, escape the last defender and outcoming keeper and send the ball into the open net. For good measure she added one more, this time volleying a bouncing ball with her opposite foot over the goalie and in for the goal. It was the third game for Moulton of three goals or more in the past four games.

With the win the Lady Howlers improved to 6-2 and will travel to Lincoln to face Mattanawcook Academy on Friday. Brooklynn Raymond saved 9 of 15 shots, and she and the defense recorded their fourth straight shutout.

Central keeper Shiloh Graham stopped 8 of 17 shots for her team, and the Red Devils (6-5) will host Bucksport next Tuesday.

PVHS girls soccer records fifth straight shutout in win over Mattanawcook

The 2024 edition of the PVHS girls soccer team had high offensive expectations, returning players that accounted for 76 goals from the previous season. What was a bit of a question mark was the defense, after losing some key members from the 2023 team. After five straight shutouts however, four of them against Class C opponents, they are starting to prove that their ability to defend is a major strength.

At Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln on Friday, the two teams were engaged in a defensive stalemate for 61 minutes until Rylee Moulton scored to break the scoreless tie and help propel Penobscot Valley to the 2-0 win.

The goal started with a possession by two-time PVC Player of the Year midfielder Lila Cummings on her teams defensive end.  Cummings sent a beautiful lead pass to Moulton ahead of the Mattanawcook back line. Moulton was the first player to get to it as the defenders converged around her, and she was able to sneak it past the outcoming goalie into the lower left corner of the net.

The second and final goal of the game started and ended in similar fashion, as the Cummings to Moulton connection struck again. This time it began along the left flank, as Cummings sent a cross to the middle of the field around the penalty kick line. The ball deflected off a Lynx defender and found its way to Moulton at the 18 yard line, where she quickly collected it and fired a shot in the left corner for an insurance goal.

With the win, the Lady Howlers improved to 7-2 and are riding a six game winning streak after dropping two of their first three of the season. Brooklynn Raymond continues to have an outstanding season in net, saving 7 of 10 shots. PVHS will head to Houlton to play under the lights at 5:30 Monday evening.

Goalie Eliza Bonath stopped 8 of 17 shots for Mattanawcook Academy, who dropped to 5-4-1 on the season. The Lady Lynx will travel to Washington Academy on Tuesday.
