Moulton scores four times as PVHS girls soccer wins again

In Houlton on a cold and wet Monday evening, the PVHS Lady Howlers extended their winning streak to seven games as they defeated the host Shiretowners 4-1 in girls soccer action.

The first goal came courtesy of a corner kick 15 minutes in. Junior Lila Cummings lofted a cross that reached the center of the box, where fellow junior Rylee Moulton headed it out of the air and into the back of the net.  With 12:49 remaining Houlton got the equalizer however. Keitonya Skepple drew some defenders and sent a drop pass to Reagan Wright, who blasted a 25 yard shot the zipped right under the crossbar.

The goal must have sparked something in PVHS however, as they responded with another goal just 32 seconds later. A build-up from midfield found Charlotte Brochu from a Cummings pass, who quickly found the feet of Moulon by the 18. After a quick cut she put the ball in the left corner for the goal. Just over three minutes later, Moulton completed the hat trick by finishing a Cummings assist for a two-goal cushion heading into the half. Moulton had the only goal of the second half, scoring unassisted with about eight minutes left.

With the win the Lady Howlers improve to 8-2 on the season, and will travel to Orono on Wednesday. Brooklynn Raymond saved 8 of 18 shots for PVHS, who gave up their first goal in over 500 minutes of game play.
Houlton dropped to 1-7 and hosts Foxcroft Academy on Wednesday. Gwen Ramsey saved 9 of 22 shots.

PVHS continues to roll along, winning eighth straight game in victory over Orono

At Orono Wednesday, the Orono Lady Red Riots jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the visiting PVHS Lady Howlers stormed back with four unanswered goals to get the 4-1 win on the road.

Similarly to when the two teams faced off in Howland last month, Orono held a 1-0 lead within the first 9 minutes of the game.  Sophomore Nina Mitchell sent a line drive past goalie Brooklynn Raymond in the upper part of the net. With just under 12 minutes to play in the half however, Rylee Moulton would score the equalizer for PVHS off a Lila Cummings corner kick. The teams would go into halftime knotted up at 1-1.

With under 18 minutes to play, Cummings kicked a hard shot that deflected off an opponent and headed toward the far post. Freshman Kaylee Woodman was there to drill it into the goal to put her team up for good 2-1. With 4:26 to play, they would get an insurance goal from Moulton as she went one on one with the goalie. Just 50 seconds later they would score one more, credited to Tiana Grant who stuffed home a ball off a kick by Moulton that was heading toward the far post.

With the win, PVHS moved to 9-2 on the season and will face off against Bangor Christian Friday night. Brooklynn Raymond saved 6 of 22 shots. Orono falls to 4-4-1 and will host Mattanawcook Academy on Friday. Kate Higgins stopped 10 of 18 shots in net.

Cummings scores twice as PVHS girls top Bangor Christian

At Howland Friday night, junior Lila Cummings scored two goals as the PVHS Lady Howlers collected their ninth win in a row defeating Bangor Christian 2-0.

The game was competitive from the get go, with the teams splitting the time of possession very evenly. Finally at the 16:33 minute mark in the first half, Cummings controlled the ball near the top corner of the goalie box and streaked to her left. As she created some separation she kicked a low liner into the net past keeper Addison Tucker for a 1-0 lead.

The score would remain that way until around the 30 minute mark of the second half, on a play that started with a long Cummings pass across the field and into the box to Rylee Moulton. Moulton collected the ball and was set to make her move when a Lady Patriot defender, who was hustling to recover and contacted Moulton and committed a foul. This led to a penalty kick that Cummings converted doubling the lead, and PVHS would hold on from there to collect the win.

PVHS improved to 10-2, and are currently sitting at the top of the crowded Class D North standings. Sophomore Brooklynn Raymond saved 11 of 12 shots for Penobscot Valley, and in the process with the help from her defense recorded her sixth shutout of the season. The next game for the Lady Howlers will be a rematch against Bangor Christian in Bangor on Thursday.
For the Lady Patriots, Tucker stopped 10 of 16 shots. They dropped to 3-6-1 on the year and will travel to Dover to face Foxcroft Academy on Tuesday.

Cummings helps lead Penobscot Valley past Bangor Christian

The PVHS Lady Howlers faced Bangor Christian for the second time in six days on Thursday, and after struggling for much of the last game to find the back of the net they would race to an early 1-0 lead just 27 seconds into the game en route to a 4-0 win in Bangor.

The scoring started with an attack along the left side that found the feet of senior Tiana Grant. Grant centered the ball in the box, where Rylee Moulton shot it and scored her 22nd goal of the season. It remained 1-0 at halftime.

Five minutes into the second half, Penobscot Valley struck again. Junior Savannah Durost controlled the ball and made a flat pass above the 18 yard line to Lila Cummings. Cummings rifled a shot over the hands of Bangor Christian goalie Addison Tucker under the crossbar for a 2-0 advantage. Less than two minutes later and just about from the same exact spot, Cummings scored a goal that was practically a mirror image of the previous one. The scoring concluded in the final few minutes, when Cummings sent a cross from the outside to freshman Hailie Leathers who attacked the airborne ball with her body and redirected it into the net.

PVHS improved to 11-2 on the season, and extended their winning streak to ten games. Brooklynn Raymond (7 saves on 12 shots), and the Lady Howler defense led by Allie LeBlanc, Shay Ireland, Eve McNally, Baileigh Leet, Abby Farley, and Emma-Leigh Mailman recorded their 7th shutout in the past nine outings. Penobscot Valley will honor their seniors prior to their last game of the regular season in Howland on Tuesday vs PCHS.

Bangor Christian drops to 3-8-1 and will host Mattanawcook Academy in their final game of the season Monday. Tucker saved 9 of 15 shots for the Lady Patriots.

Lady Howlers roll on Senior Night, extending their winning streak to 11

At Howland on Tuesday, Penobscot Valley girls soccer honored Ellie Austin, Tiana Grant, Shay Ireland, and Allie LeBlanc as part of their Senior Recognition Ceremony and then topped PCHS 6-0 in their regular season finale.

The Lady Howlers put four goals on the board in the first half, starting with a blast outside the 18 yard line from junior Lila Cummings that was assisted by Savannah Durost. Less than a minute later, a Charlotte Brochu pass found Rylee Moulton, who buried her shot for her team-leading 23rd goal of the season. The Brochu to Moulton connection occurred again as a give and go led Moulton to go one on one with the PCHS keeper and finding a corner for the score. Cummings rounded out the first half scoring with a goal from a corner kick that bent toward the goal line and deflected off a Lady Pirate defender for the unassisted goal.

It was a pair of freshmen getting credit for the two goals in the second half.  First, Kaylee Woodman redirected an Abby Castonway cross that found the left corner of the net. The final tally was started from an Allie LeBlanc shot from the 18 in which the goalie had a hard time controlling, and Nicole Solomon pounced on it to finish it into the back of the net.

With the win, PVHS extended their winning streak to 11 games with their last defeat coming on September 18th. They finished the regular season with a record of 12-2, and will go into the playoffs as the number 3 seed where they will face Madawaska in a quarterfinal on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Brooklynn Raymond stopped 6 out of 9 shots for the Lady Howlers, as she and the defense got their 8th shutout of the year.

PCHS wraps up their season with a 0-13 record, as goalies Braylin Beckwith and Avah Miles combined to save 12 of 26 shots for the Lady Pirates.

PVHS gets off to fast start, downs Madawaska in a quarterfinal

At Howland on Tuesday, PVHS jumped out to a 4-0 first half lead and rolled to a 7-2 win over Madawaska in a Class D quarterfinal.

Ellie Austin made her presence felt immediately, after missing extended time this season with an injury.  With just under eight minutes into the game, the senior attacked an airborne Lila Cummings corner kick and put it into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Roughly eight minutes later, Cummings sent a lead pass to Rylee Moulton who fired one from beyond the 18 yard line and past the Owls keeper Dinesha Sirois.  The next goal started with a lead pass to the edge of the box from Savannah Durost to Moulton. Moulton calmly dropped a beautiful pass to the center of the field, where Cummings collected it and sent it into the lower right side of the net. The final tally of the half for PVHS started with a Brooklynn Raymond punt that cleared midfield.  Madawaska was the first to touch the ball, but Moulton quickly gained control and sidestepped an opponent, racing to the top of the circle where she shot and found the lower left corner for a 4-0 lead. A few minutes later the Madawaska would get on the board, as Payton Pelletier converted a penalty kick.

Madawaska would make things interesting to start the second half, as Dasha Denilichiva would score in a crowd in front of the net narrowing the gap to two. But as they have often done all season when faced with adversity, the Lady Howlers responded almost immediately by scoring within two minutes of that goal. This one came off the foot of Austin, who received a long pass from center-back Eve McNally and fired a 24 yard shot over the keeper and under the crossbar. Moulton struck again at the 25 minute mark as her deflected shot bounced back to her feet, then sidestepped a defender and calmly pushed the ball into the open left corner. Cummings would cap the scoring as she attacked an Owls goal kick, moved towards the center of the field and blasted a high shot into the net from beyond the 18.

With the win PVHS improves to 13-2 on the season, and adds to their current 12 game winning streak. The Howlers will travel up to Mars Hill to face #2 Central Aroostook in a semifinal game at 5pm on Friday. Keeper Raymond stopped 9 of 14 shots for Penobscot Valley.

Madawaska, who had won three of their previous four games, concluded their season with a 6-9 record.  Sirois saved 10 of 28 shots for the Lady Owls.

Big scoring night by Cummings helps propel PVHS Lady Howlers to another Northern Maine Championship Game

In what has seemed to be a regular occurrence over the past few years, Penobscot Valley and Central Aroostook girls met in the semifinals on Friday night.  The Lady Howlers scored just 3:18 minutes into the game and never looked back, notching a 6-0 win and punching their ticket to the Northern Maine Championship Game.

In both 2022 and 2023 these two teams faced off in the semis, with PVHS being the higher seed in both instances. Due to field conditions though, instead of playing in Howland the games were played on turf fields at Hampden in 2022 (2-1 PV win) and Husson in 2023 (2-0 PV win). Central Aroostook however earned the higher seed this year, setting up the match in Mars Hill on a windy, rainy, and cool evening. It didn't take long for the Lady Howlers to heat up however, scoring the game winner just over three minutes in. The play started with a simple throw-in from Savannah Durost to Rylee Moulton on the sideline deep in C.A. territory. Moulton shielded her defender while possessing the ball with her back toward the goal, and broke toward the middle. A perfect flat pass across the 18 yard line to a cutting Lila Cummings gave her a great look at the net, and she buried a low shot in the right corner. Cummings second goal started with possession around midfield, as her and senior central midfielder Allie LeBlanc worked their give-and-gos up the field and into the box, where once again Cummings found daylight to shoot and score.

The final PVHS goals of the first half came within four minutes of each other, with the first coming at the 13:07 mark. Centerback Eve McNally cleared a potential Panther attack up to the middle of the field, where senior Ellie Austin one-touched the ball ahead of the back line to the speedy Moulton. Moulton raced ahead and went one on one with the keeper, tucking the ball into the low left corner. The last goal of the half started with a corner kick by Cummings that freshman Kaylee Woodman initially got a body on from the back post, sending it back across the box to Moulton. Moulton had a quick touch to Charlotte Brochu, who dropped it back out toward an incoming Cummings who drilled an opposite foot chip shot up and over goalkeeper Charlie Pierce for a 4-0 lead.

In the second half, Central Aroostook got more opportunities with their wind at their backs but keeper Brooklynn Raymond and defenders LeBlanc, McNally, Shay Ireland, Baileigh Leet, and Abby Farley played magnificent in minimizing their attacks and keeping them out of the net. PVHS scored two more insurance goals, with the first coming at the 30:08 mark. Cummings drew a foul above the circle of the 18, and proceeded to fire a rocket off the direct kick past the keeper for a 5-0 cushion. The final tally occurred with under three minutes to go, when freshman midfielder Brochu took a well-placed Moulton cross at the 18 yard line and she finished it in the low right corner for her first varsity goal.

With the win, Penobscot Valley will play in their fifth straight Northern Maine Championship Game Tuesday evening at Presque Isle vs Ashland at 6:30 pm.  Raymond and the defense notched their 10th shutout of the season. She saved 8 of 15 shots for the 14-2 Lady Howlers. Pierce was busy in net, facing 31 shots and stopping 11 for the Panthers who finished their season with a 12-4 record.

PVHS wins third straight Class D Northern Maine Championship

In Presque Isle on Tuesday, the PVHS girls soccer team utilized their speed and open-field attacks to overcome the Ashland Hornets in the Class D Northern Maine Finals, winning 3-0.

After going 12-2 during the regular season and competing against primarily Class C teams, the Lady Howlers went into the playoffs as the #3 seed while their opponent captured the top spot. The challenging schedule however seemed to pay off, as they appeared ready to play under the bright lights. Penobscot Valley got on the board first with about 14 minutes left before the half. The play started when Ashland keeper Angel Hafford sent a punt toward the middle of the field, where Howlers senior Allie LeBlanc was the first to touch it and send it to Rylee Moulton. Moulton made a quick move past a defender and created just enough space to get a 25 yard shot off. The ball was struck perfectly, as it sailed into the upper left corner for the 1-0 lead.  The lead was tested just a few minutes later as the Lady Hornets drew a foul inside
the penalty area. The resulting penalty kick however bounced off the right post and back onto the field, as it was finally cleared away by PVHS.

Eight minutes into the second half, the Lady Howlers got a little bit of breathing room on a play that started by keeper Brooklynn Raymond who punted one out beyond midfield. Moulton skimmed the ball with her head off the bounce to Ellie Austin, who was able to get past the last defender and finished with a beautifully placed ball in the right corner with her left foot. Raymond would not only start the next and final Lady Howler goal, she would also be credited with an assist on the play. On an Ashland corner kick, Raymond rose above an attacker and got a clean catch over her head. She quickly got to her line and sailed a booming punt to a streaking Moulton, who raced past the defenders and collected the ball sidestepped the goalie, and tucked it into the open net for the insurance goal.

With the win Penobscot Valley improves to 15-2 and will play in their third straight state championship game. There, they will try to win back to back titles as they take on Buckfield in Bath at 5:30 Saturday evening.  Raymond saved 12 of 21 shots, as her and the rock-solid defense notched their 10th shutout of the season.

Top seed Ashland finishes their season at 13-4. Hafford stopped 14 of 21 shots for the Lady Hornets.

Lady Howlers Secure Back-to-Back State Championships

At McMann Athletic Complex in Bath Friday night, the PVHS Lady Howlers took the field for the Class D state game as the defending champions, and left the field capturing their second in a row by defeating Buckfield 2-0.

It has been an incredible five year stretch for the Penobscot Valley girls soccer program, starting with a Northern Maine Championship in 2019, eventually narrowly falling to North Yarmouth Academy in the state final 1-0 after a late-game goal. The Lady Howlers followed it with winning their region's "Covid-Cup" in 2020, finishing as Northern Maine runner-up in 2021, state runner-up in 2022, before winning it all last season.

The matchup Friday featured two teams playing the best soccer in their respective regions. Buckfield only dropped one game all season while outscoring their opponents 81 to 13. As for PVHS, they seemed to be peaking at the right time by riding a 14-game winning streak going into the contest and notching 10 shutouts in their previous 13 games.

Penobscot Valley broke through early offensively. Kai Trenoweth from Buckfield led a promising opportunity upfield, only to have the ball deflected and to the feet of sophomore defender Bailiegh Leet, who sent the ball forward to forward Ellie Austin. With the defense sagging back and little pressure at her back, Austin waited for Lila Cummings to fill the center of the field and send her the pass. Cummings made a series of cutbacks, dribbling to the goal box and drawing two defenders. She tapped the ball to her right, where Rylee Moulton made a face-cut to get inside her defender to receive the ball, pushed it forward and sent it past goalie Kianna Finnegan for a 1-0 PVHS lead. After a back and forth for 32 minutes, the score remained a one goal game heading into half-time.

Both teams continued to have opportunities into the second half, when the Lady Howlers broke through again. The play started with a Cummings corner kick from the right side, and deflected off an attacking Moulton bouncing to the feet of junior Savannah Durost. Durost fired a shot that was blocked by Buckfield Regional All-Star midfielder Cora Brewster, and the ball ended up at feet of Charlotte Brochu. Brochu made a quick pass to Austin, who made a soft flat pass across the 18 yard line toward Moulton.  Moulton and her defender both attacked the ball, with Moulton getting there first and dropping it back to Cummings who had hustled to recover back into position from the corner. Cummings did what she excels at, and blasted the 25 yard shot into the back of the net for the 2-0 cushion.

The final ten minutes in particular were intense for Penobscot Valley, as they fought to keep the fast, aggressive, and skilled Lady Bucks off the board. But as they've done all year, goalie Brooklynn Raymond and defenders Eve McNally, Allie LeBlanc, Shay Ireland, Abby Farley, and Leet stepped up to the challenge to keep the ball out of the goal allowing the team to finish off the 2-0 victory. Raymond was superb once again in net, as she continues to show she's one of the best keepers in the area stopping 10 of 19 shots.

It's been an amazing year for the Lady Howlers as they had a target on their backs all season (as defending champions), and started off the season with a rocky 1-2 record before winning 15 straight that included seven wins against Class C opponents. After losing two senior PVC All- Stars on defense from last season (Emma Potter and Mia Neal), the group turned what was the biggest question mark leading into the season into one of its biggest strengths.  The team has been led all year by captains LeBlanc, Ireland, Austin, and Cummings.

Penobscot Valley will say goodbye to four amazing seniors who were all integral to the team success this year. Tiana Grant, who came to PVHS as an upperclassman, was a forward who tallied three goals and foud assists this year. She was assigned the challenge in the state Game of shadowing Buckfield star Brittany Carrier who had scored an amazing 46 goals this season, and Grant did an outstanding job helping to contain her. Shay Ireland was part of the back line that helped with all of those shutouts, and was a true leader on and off the field. Ellie Austin spent a large part of the season working through an injury, but returned at a key time for the playoffs to spark the team when it needed her the most. She finished her career with 55 goals.  LeBlanc was a back-line defender for three years, before moving to a central midfielder after their third game of the season, helping to solidify the midfield and righting the ship for the team. Allie also was a vocal leader for the team on and off the field. Ireland, Austin, and LeBlanc wrap up their four year soccer career with an overall record of 64-5-1, reaching four regional championship games and winning three of them, while also reaching three state championships and winning two of them. An amazing four year stretch that not many teams can rival.

2024 members include Ellie Austin, Tiana Grant, Shay Ireland, Allie LeBlanc, Lila Cummings, Savannah Durost, Addy Lyons, Eve McNally, Rylee Moulton, Abby Farley, Jasmine Jackson, Bailiegh Leet, Emma-Leigh Mailman, Brooklynn Raymond, Charlotte Brochu, Abby Castonguay, Hailie Leathers, Nicole Solomon, Kylie Smith, Kaylee Woodman, and videographer Camryn Donovan.  Coaches are Jeremy Durost, Lana Cummings, Jason Spencer, and Jason Neal.

Congratulations to the Lady Howlers, 2024 Class D State Champions!
