Brewer upsets top seeded Hampden

Grady Vanidestine came up one out short of a complete game, and Logan Littlefield provided the only offense with a first inning RBI double on Wednesday afternoon as the #8 Brewer Witches upset #1 Hampden Academy 1-0 at Bordick Park in Hampden in a Class A baseball quarterfinal.

Kaden Morin had a one out double to left centerfield for Brewer in the top of the first inning, before Littlefield came through with what turned out to be the game winner with a double down the rightfield line with two outs to score Morin. Hampden had their best chance of the afternoon to do some damage in their first at bat. Andrew Cote led off with a groundball single to center, and with one out Collin Peckham singled to left. TJ Llerena loaded the bases with a two out walk, before Vanidestine struckout Rogan Lord looking to escape the jam. Broncos starting pitcher Kaysen Wildman settled in after the opening inning, as he retired 12 batters in a row at one point after a walk to Zach Arnold in the second and didn't allow another hit. Vanidestine was also in control, as he didn't let another Hampden baserunner reach scoring position after the first inning threat. The senior lefthander reached his pitch count (111) after striking out the first two batters in the seventh, and Arnold came on in relief. The hosts would threaten in trying to keep their season alive by putting two runners on when Cote drew a walk, and Garrett McLeod would reach on an error by Witches shortstop Logan Littlefield. Littlefield got some redemption though, as the next batter Collin Peckham grounded one to him and he flipped to second baseman Jake Perry to erase McLeod to end the game on a fielders choice.

Vanidestine earned the victory on the hill for Brewer allowing no runs on five hits, with two walks and 11 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Arnold got the one out save. Wildman was the tough luck loser for Hampden giving up one run on two hits (both came in first inning), with one walk and four strikeouts in a complete 7.0 inning effort. McLeod had two hits for the Broncos, who left eight men on base. They end their season with a record of 15-2. The Witches (8-9) advance to the Northern Maine semifinals to play on the road against either Bangor or Oxford Hills on Saturday. The Rams and Vikings play their quarterfinal on Thursday afternoon. Brewer turned the tables this season, as last season they were eliminated as the #1 seed in the quarterfinals.

Johnson helps lead Bangor over Oxford Hills

Kyle Johnson pitched a complete game, and also helped his own cause by driving in two runs on Thursday afternoon in leading the Bangor Rams to a 6-2 Class A baseball quarterfinal win over the Oxford Hills Vikings at Mansfield Stadium.

Bangor never trailed. The Rams jumped on top 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning when Jack Schuck had a one out single and stole second base, and was driven in by Johnson who slapped an RBI double to left centerfield with two outs. They padded their advantage in the third when Schuck reached on an error to lead off. With one out, Johnson walked and Scott Sockabasin who reached on a fielders choice went to third base on a throwing error. Johnson stole second with Ethan Sproul batting, and then Sproul would come through with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Johnson added another RBI with a double to left in the fourth that rolled all the way to the fence to score pinch runner Trey Tennett. Meanwhile, the senior righthander was getting it done on the mound. He allowed the first Vikings baserunner of the afternoon on a walk in the fourth inning, before their first hit came in the fifth on a two out single by Brady Truman. Oxford Hills got to Johnson finally in the sixth when Gunner Truman led off and reached second base on a throwing error, and Carter Holbrook and Colton Jendrick followed with an RBI triple and an RBI single respectively to slice the deficit in half. Johnson retired the next three batters consecutively to end the rally. Bangor added some insurance with a two out, two-run single from Sockabasin in the last half of the sixth. Johnson capped off his compete game by retiring the Vikings in order in the seventh inning.

Johnson picked up the pitching win for the Rams allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 7.0 innings. He was also the leading hitter at the plate going 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBI, a stolen base, and a run scored. Brady Truman took the loss on the mound for the Vikings as he was charged for six runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Holbrook and Jendrick had the runs knocked in, as Oxford Hills ends their season with a record of 10-7. Bangor, now 10-6-1 and the #4 seed, will host quarterfinal upset winner #8 Brewer (8-9) in a cross the river rivalry game in the semifinals on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mansfield Stadium. The Rams and Witches split their two regular season meetings.

Bangor rallies past Brewer to advance to the Class A Northern Maine Final behind a big fourth inning and the relief pitching of Stephenson

BANGOR- The Bangor Rams scored four times in the fourth inning, and got a solid relief pitching outing from Teddy Stephenson to rally from behind to beat the Brewer Witches 7-3 in a Class A baseball semifinal game played at Mansfield Stadium Saturday night.

The #8 seed Witches who had knocked off top seed Hampden in the quarterfinals got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the second inning and one in the third to take an early 3-0 advantage. Nick Tozier had an RBI single down the rightfield line in the second, and then would score later in the frame on a wild pitch. Hunter Merrithew added an RBI single in the third. The Rams got one back in the last of the third inning, helped by four walks and four wild pitches from Brewer starting pitcher Kaiden Morin as Yates Emerson crossed the plate on one of those wild pitches. The Bangor offense came to life scoring four times in the fourth against Brewer reliever Zach Arnold. Jack Earl led off with a groundball single to leftfield, and then Gavin Glanville-True reached on an error while trying to sacrifice the runner sending Earl over to third base. Emerson lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to center to cut it to 3-2, and then consecutive RBI hits by Jack Schuck (double), Scott Sockabasin (single), and Kyle Johnson (double) pushed the Rams ahead to stay 5-3. The single by Sockabasin turned out to be the game winner. Ethan Sproul came up big to give his team some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth with a two out, two-run single. Brewer loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Stephenson induced Merrithew into a fielders choice groundout to end it.

Jake Perry, Morin, Merrithew, and Tozier each had two hits in the loss for Brewer. Arnold suffered the pitching defeat giving up four runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in 2.0 innings. Morin went the first 3.0 frames allowing one run on one hit with five walks and four strikeouts. The Witches end their season with a record of 8-10. Schuck reached base three of the four times at the plate for Bangor scoring twice, and adding an RBI double that tied the game. Johnson also reached three times with a hit by pitch, a walk, and an RBI double. Sophomore Matt Turcotte started on the hill for the Rams and got a no-decision in 2.2 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Stephenson didn't allow a run in earning the victory over the final 4.1 innings as he would give up five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. #4 seed Bangor improves to 11-6-1 and advances to the Class A Northern Regional Final on Tuesday to face #2 Messalonskee (15-3) at Morton Field in Augusta. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.

#6 Caribou baseball headed back to the state final for a second time with upset win over #1 Ellsworth in regional final

BANGOR- Keegan Bell had a go ahead two-run single in the third inning, and Bryce Dillon only gave up one run while pitching into the sixth on Tuesday afternoon in leading the Caribou Vikings to a 4-2 win over the Ellsworth Eagles in the Class B North Baseball Regional Final played at Mansfield Stadium. Caribou now advances to their second ever state championship appearance.

Caribou never trailed. They took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Bryce Martin reached on a lead off error, and then with two outs was driven in on a shot down the leftfield line by Dawson St. Pierre. After Ellsworth made an attempt to throw out Martin at the plate, St. Pierre kept running but was thrown out at third. The Eagles tied it in the bottom half on a line drive RBI single to left with two outs by Wyatt Bragdon. The Vikings pulled back ahead for good in the third. Brayden Brescia led off with a double, and Edison Sleeper and Matt Pelletier both followed with walks. Bell with the bases loaded came through with a two-run single to make it 3-1. Dillon helped his own cause by drawing a walk, this time with the bases loaded to force in another run. Meanwhile, he was also doing in on the mound. After the Eagles scored their run in the second inning, they only had two baserunners over the next three frames against the lefthander. He left with one out in the sixth, as Luke Beidelman came on in relief. Ellsworth had two runners on in that sixth inning on walks, but Brayden King lined one right to the second baseman Nic Plourde who flipped to first for an easy doubleplay to end that threat. Dawson Curtis had a two out RBI single in the last chance for the Eagles in the last of the seventh, but Beidelman induced the tying run Miles Palmer to popout to shortstop to end it.

Bragdon led the top seeded Eagles at the plate going 2-3 with two singles, an RBI, and a run scored. Curtis took the pitching loss giving up four runs on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings. King was very good in relief to keep his team in the game allowing no runs and no hits with three walks and five strikeouts over the final 4.0 innings. Ellsworth ends their season with a record of 17-2. Brescia had two hits for Caribou and also scored a run. Bell had his big two-run hit, and St. Pierre reached base twice with a walk, a single, and an RBI. Dillon went 5.1 innings allowing one run on two hits with six walks and four strikeouts to get the win. Beidelman picked up the save giving up a run on two hits over 1.2 innings. The Vikings (12-7) win their second regional title and first since 2014, and will play Yarmouth for the state championship at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. Caribou in their school history hasn't won a baseball state title.

Sacopee scores four runs in the fifth, wins fifth baseball state title

ORONO- The Sacopee Valley Hawks scored four times in the fifth inning on Saturday afternoon, and rallied to defeat the Bucksport Golden Bucks 4-3 in the Class C Baseball State Championship game at Mahaney Diamond.

Bucksport, who reached the state final as the #4 seed out of the North, would score a pair of unearned runs to jump on the board first. Gavyn Holyoke led off the bottom of the second inning with a line drive single to centerfield, and would advance to second on a wild pitch by Sacopee starting pitcher Dylan Capano. Holyoke would then score after a sacrifice bunt by Jason Terrill back to Capano was thrown wild at first base for an error. The Golden Bucks took advantage of another Hawks error in the fourth to double their lead. Trent Goss led off with a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and then scored on a throwing error by shortstop Caleb Vacchiano.

Sacopee would then come alive in the big fifth inning to score all they runs they needed. Bryce Stacey led off with a single, and Bradley Metcalf would reach on a wild pitch on a swinging third strike. On the same play, Stacey was thrown out trying to go to third. Capano then helped his own cause with a bullet of a liner that went over the head of Bucksport leftfielder Connor Fitch for an RBI triple. Braiden Croteau followed with a groundball RBI single to rightfield to tie it, and then after a walk to Keegan Thibodeau and a wild pitch to move the runners up Vacchiano came through with the eventual game winner with a two-run single to left to make it 4-2 Hawks. A key play by the Sacopee defense in the last half of the fifth denied the tying run for the Bucks. After Clair and Bo Provencher walked with one out, Ayden McGuire reached on an infield single to load the bases. An error by Capano on a squeeze play allowed pinch runner Eli Bennett to score to slice it to a one run deficit. With Goss next up to bat and the bases still loaded, he would hit one to the third baseman Thibodeau who came home to cut down the runner on a force play. Catcher Brady Metcalf then quickly fired to first to try to double up Goss, but the ball was dropped and Provencher didn't stop running and attempted to score. The Hawks first baseman Stacey would fire a strike into his catcher to nail Provencher on a tag play at the plate for the third out. Bucksport would then go in order in the sixth inning, and in the seventh they were able to get a two out baserunner after an error but Capano struckout Maguire looking to end it.

Stacey and Bradly Metcalf both reached base twice in the win for Sacopee, and Capano backed his good pitching performance with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. On the mound, the lefthander went the distance allowing three runs (only one earned) on just two hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts. Vacchiano, who will be attending the University of Maine to play baseball and recently was named the Gatorade Player of the Year, also provided his timely two-run game winning hit. Maguire and Holyoke had the hits in the loss for Bucksport, and Holyoke also took the pitching defeat also going the distance giving up four runs on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. The Bucks end a great season as runners-up with a record of 13-7. The Hawks, who were the #2 seed out of the South, finish at 16-4 winning their first state championship since 2016 and fifth overall. Jamie Stacey won a state crown as a player (1992), and now as the head coach for the same school.
