Scholl pitches Brunswick baseball to road win over Brewer
Liam Scholl pitched a two-hit complete game shutout, and Brunswick took advantage of two Brewer errors in the sixth inning to score a 1-0 Class A North baseball victory at Heddericg Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Brewer also pitched well in the defeat, not allowing any earned runs. Logan Littlefield went the first 2.0 innings on the mound, and was perfect while striking out four. Aiden McCue went the next 3.2 innings allowing three hits, three walks, and striking out five. McCue was in the game when Brunswick struck for the only run in the sixth. Henry Blood got on base to lead off the frame on a comebacker that McCue couldn't handle, scored as an error. Later in the inning, with runners on first and third and two outs, Scholl who walked took off for second on a steal. Witches catcher Kaiden Morin threw down, but shortstop Blake Littlefield who saw the runner also breaking for home plate tried to cut it off and dropped it for another error allowing Blood to come across for the unearned run that was the game winner.
Morin and Jake Perry had the lone hits in the loss for Brewer (2-4), and McCue was tagged with the pitching defeat. Blood had two hits for Brunswick (3-3), while Scholl and Anthony Cooley had one each. The final line for Scholl was 7.0 innings pitched, giving up no runs on just two hits, with two walks and 10 strikeouts. He threw 98 pitches (61 for strikes), and retired 15 of the last 16 Witches batters he faced. Brewer and Brunswick both return to action on Friday, as the Witches play at first place Hampden and the Dragons host Medomak Valley.
Chadbourne leads PCHS to baseball win over Searsport
Scott Chadbourne hit a two run double and closed the game on the mound with three scoreless innings to lead the Piscataquis Community High School (PCHS) Pirates to a 6-2 win at Searsport on Wednesday afternoon.
Searsport took a 1-0 lead lead in the bottom of the first inning when Drew Bagley ripped a double that scored a run. The Pirates evened the score when they took advantage of two Vikings errors and Gaige Tracy crossed the plate in the top of the second inning. Ashton Ellis walked with the bases loaded to give Searsport the lead back in the bottom of the frame.
The Pirates took advantage of a passed ball, an error, and a wild pitch to score two runs and take a lead (3-2) they wouldn't give back in the top of the third inning. Chadbourne hit his two run double and the Pirates added another run on a Vikings miscue in the top of the 5th inning.
Noah Kain started on the mound for the Pirates, allowing two runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out eight. Chadbourne pitched the final three innings. He allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out four. Chadbourne threw 45 pitches (29 strikes). Chadbourne reached base twice and had three RBI, and Ben Higgins reached base twice and scored two runs. Brady Gaw reached base twice with one hit, while Tracy also reached base twice. PCHS (4-1) will play at Stearns on Friday.
Bagley allowed six runs (one earned) in five innings, he allowed three hits and two walks, while striking out 11. Gavin Kronholm led the Vikings offense with two hits. Searsport (3-3) will play at Bucksport on Friday.
