Anderson Clifford broke a 1-1 tie with a game winning RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Grady Vanidestine pitched a solid game on the mound in leading the Brewer Witches to a 4-1 win over Bangor Rams in Class A baseball action on Senior Night and the regular season finale for both teams at Heddericg Field on Tuesday night.
The Witches broke on top 1-0 when Logan Littlefield hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first. The Rams got even on an RBI single from Jack Schuck in the top of the third inning. The score remained the same until Brewer batted in the bottom of the sixth, as both starting pitchers Vanidestine and Kyle Johnson for Bangor were both outstanding. Brewer loaded the bases in that last of the sixth before Clifford singled to leftfield for a 2-1 lead. Hunter Merrithew was next up to bat, and the runner from third broke for home on an apparent suicide squeeze play but Merrithew didn't bunt. Schuck the catcher tried to make the tag at the plate, but the ball fell out of his glove and went to the backstop allowing that runner and the runner from second to also score on the play.
Schuck led Bangor with three hits and an RBI in the loss, as the Rams end the regular season having already made the playoffs at 9-6-1. Yates Emerson added two hits. Johnson went 6.0 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Logan Littlefield, Clifford, Jake Perry, and Zach Arnold had one hit a piece for Brewer. Littlefield and Clifford each had an RBI. Vanidestine earned the win on the hill giving up one run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in a 6.0 inning performance. Arnold worked the seventh for the save. The Witches will await the completion of some other games before finding out their postseason fate, as they currently sit in 8th place in the standings with a record of 7-9.
