In its 39th year of honoring the nation’s most elite high school athletes, Gatorade today announced Caleb Vacchiano of Sacopee Valley High School is the 2023-24 Gatorade Maine Baseball Player of the
Year. Vacchiano is the first Gatorade Maine Baseball Player of the Year to be chosen from Sacopee Valley High School.
The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and
in the community, distinguishes Vacchiano as Maine’s best high school baseball player. From CEOs and coaches to star athletes, Gatorade Player of the Year winners showcase the power of sport, touting an all-star group of alumni that includes Gary Sheffield (1985-86, Hillsborough High School, Fla.), Alex Rodriguez (1992-93,
Westminster Christian School, Fla.), Clayton Kershaw (2005-06, Highland Park High School, Texas) and Max Clark
(2022-23, 2021-22 & 2020-21, Franklin Community High School, Ind.).
At the time of his selection, the 5-foot-11, 215-pound senior shortstop and right-handed pitcher had led the Hawks
(12-3) to a berth in the Maine Class C state tournament this season. Vacchiano batted .476 with four home runs and
16 RBI through 15 games, scoring 24 runs and producing an OPS of 1.518. He also compiled a 1-0 record on the mound with a 1.31 ERA and 35 strikeouts against just five walks in 26.2 innings pitched. The 2023 Western Maine Class C Player of the Year, Vacchiano hit .635 with nine home runs as a junior and ranks as Maine’s No. 3 player in the Class of 2024 as rated by Perfect Game.
A National Honor Society member, Vacchiano has volunteered locally at Edna Libby Elementary School and as a
peer mentor at Sacopee Valley Middle School. “He’s a top-one-percent elite hitter at our level,” said Paul Grazia,
head coach at Waynflete High School. “He would be wildly successful at any level of Maine high school baseball. During our games, we are fully prepared to intentionally walk him every single time, regardless of situation. When
we don’t, I instantly regret it. He hit a game-tying home run in the state semifinal against us last year and the go-
ahead home run against us in the regular season this year.”
Vacchiano has maintained a weighted A average in the classroom. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to play
baseball on scholarship at the University of Maine this fall.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of
the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls
basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player
of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by the Gatorade Player of the Year Selection
Committee, which leverages experts including coaches, scouts, media and others as sources to help evaluate and
determine the state winners in each sport.
Vacchiano joins recent Gatorade Maine Baseball Players of the Year Andrew Heffernan (2022-23, South Portland
High School), Cody Bowker (2021-22, Thornton Academy), Brady Afthim (2020-21, Windham High School) and
Hunter Owen (2019-20, South Portland High School), among the state’s list of former award winners.
As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year also receives a grant
to donate to a social impact partner. To date, the Gatorade Player of the Year program has provided more than $4.9
million in grants to winners across more than 1,900 organizations.
