Hunter Merrithew had an RBI single that ignited a 10-run bottom of the sixth inning, and the Brewer Witches picked up a 12-2 mercy rule Class A baseball victory in their season opener over Oxford Hills at the newly renovated Heddericg Field in Brewer on Thursday afternoon.

Logan Littlefield had an RBI double in the first inning for Brewer, and the Witches got another run on a Oxford Hills error in the second for a 2-0 lead. Grady Vanidestine was in control for much of his outing on the rubber, but ran into trouble in the top of the sixth inning as the Vikings tied it on an RBI triple from Brady Truman and an RBI single by Cam Pulkkinen. Blake Littlefield came on to pitch for Brewer, and got them out of a one-out bases loaded jam with a strikeout and also inducing a popup to end the threat.

Brewer (1-0) would explode in the bottom half of the inning with the 10 runs on six hits to end it, that included the go-ahead single by Merrithew to right field. Vanidestine got a no-decision and ended up going 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and 11 strikeouts, and also did it with his bat with three hits and two RBI. Logan Littlefield had two hits and three RBI, and Jake Perry also had two hits and also knocked in two. Blake Littlefield got the win on the hill. Oxford Hills (1-1) was led by Brady Truman, Pulkkinen, and Dylan Truman who had two hits each. Pulkkinen lost on the mound in relief of starter Brady Truman. Truman had allowed just one earned run with two walks and three strikeouts over the first 4.0 innings.

Brewer is at Lewiston on Saturday at 11 a.m., while Oxford Hills next plays on Monday at Edward Little at 3:30 p.m.
