Mattanawcook pounds put 17 hits, cruises past Dexter in semifinals

DEXTER- The Mattanawcook Academy Lynx had 17 hits, and also took advantage of six Dexter Tiger errors in rolling to a 12-1 win in a Class C North semifinal softball game played at Dexter Regional High School on Monday evening.

The #2 seeded Tigers got off to a good start and took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Abagail Trafton led off with single to right centerfield, and with one out Hannah Dean drove her in with a double to left center. It was all Lynx from there however. After only two hits in the first two innings, Mattanawcook came alive to score five times on five hits in the third to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Natalie Tash and Lauren House had RBI in the frame, as they also took advantage of three Dexter errors who committed six in the game. They would add two more runs in the fourth inning on an error, then tacked on one in the sixth and four more in the seventh to set up a regional final showdown with top seeded Bucksport on Tuesday.

Ava Sutherland and Tash both had three hits and each scored three runs at the top of the Mattanawcook lineup. Sutherland drove in a run, and Tash had two RBI to help her own cause. Addison Cyr, Julianna Clukey, and Jillian Libby also added two hits a piece. Tash went the distance in the circle allowing one run on 10 hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Claire Fogler took the loss for Dexter as she was tagged with 12 runs (six earned) on 17 hits with one walk and three strikeouts as she also pitched a complete game. Trafton and Dean had two hits a piece, as the Tigers end their season with a record of 12-6. #6 Mattanawcook (14-4) takes on Bucksport (17-1) for the regional title on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Kessock Field on the campus of the University of Maine. The teams did not meet in the regular season.

Hall-Dale scores four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Bucksport and win their fourth straight Class C Softball State Championship

ORONO- It was a familiar sight at Kessock Field on Saturday afternoon, as the Hall-Dale Bulldogs were playing in their fourth straight Class C Softball State Championship game. In a rematch of the 2023 final, Hall-Dale scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Bucksport Golden Bucks 6-3 for their fourth straight state crown.

Jetta Shook got Bucksport off to a good start and on the scoreboard first with an RBI double down the leftfield line in the bottom of the second inning. Hall-Dale responded to take their first lead with two runs in the fourth. Marie Benoit, Jaden Graham, and Lucy Gray consecutively singled to load the bases, before Mira Skehan lifted an RBI sacrifice fly to rightfield to tie it 1-1. The Bulldogs got their second run on an error by Bucks first baseman Alley Hanscom.

With the score still 2-1 Hall-Dale in the bottom of the sixth inning, Bucksport would jump on top again. Lilly Chiavelli and Jaden Tripp singled, before Liv Shute would fly out. Pitcher Natalie Simpson helped her own cause with an RBI single to score Chiavelli, and Tripp would end up scoring on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 Bucks. The Bulldogs showed why they've been a dominant force in Class C in their last opportunity in the top of the seventh. Hall-Dale took advantage of a pair of Bucksport errors, and Torie Tibbetts, Zoe Soule, Ashlynn Donahue, and Graham all had singles to help four players cross the plate to take a three run lead. Donahue retired the top of the Golden Bucks lineup in order in the last of the seventh to end it.

Tibbetts reached base three times in the win for Hall-Dale via a hit, error, and a walk. Graham had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored. Benoit would add a hit, walk, and scored twice. Donahue was victorious in the circle in the complete game effort allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Simpson and Sam Cyr each had two hits in the loss for Bucksport. Simpson also walked and drove in a run, while Tripp contributed a walk, a hit, and a run scored. Simpson took the defeat in the circle giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits with five walks and 11 strikeouts. The Bucks, the top seed out of the North, finish a great season as runners-up for a second straight season (2-1 to Hall-Dale in 2023) with a record of 18-2. The #1 South seeded Bulldogs also end up with a record of 18-2, winning four state titles in a row and now back to back years over Bucksport. They also defeated Dexter (2021) and Mattanawcook (2022) during this dominant run.
