Robertson and Monmouth dominate Maine in CAA football opener Saturday afternoon
ORONO- Former Maine quarterback Derek Robertson tossed four touchdown passes, and the Monmouth Hawks put up over 600 yards of offense on Saturday afternoon in defeating the Maine Black Bears 51-22 in a Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) football opener at Alfond Stadium.
Monmouth (1-2, 1-0 CAA) got the ball first and marched down the field in 16 plays covering 75 yards, with Sone Ntoh capping it off with a four-yard touchdown run. Robertson completed passes on a third down and a fourth down to help keep the drive going. After Maine went three and out on their first offensive possession, the Hawks would make it 13-0 on the first touchdown pass of the afternoon by Robertson of 11 yards to Jack Neri. The Black Bears, who had a hard time getting any offensive consistency all afternoon, went three and out again and Robertson extended the lead for the guests to 20-0 on a touchdown pass of 25 yards to Marcus Middleton. Trevin Ewing sparked the hosts on the ensuing kickoff with a 98-yard touchdown return, and they also converted a two-point try. Monmouth got the only TD of the second quarter on a short run of two yards by Ntoh. Maine drove to the Hawks 7-yard line late in the period trying to gain some momentum going into the locker room, but the drive fizzled out and Joey Bryson missed a 25-yard field goal attempt.
Monmouth continued their domination in the second half, doing about anything they wanted through the air and on the ground. Robertson had touchdown passes of 56 and 94 yards to Josh Derry, and Rodney Nelson had a 24-yard scoring run. Jaharie Martin had a one-yard TD run, and wide receiver Joe Gillette scored on a short two-yard end around run for the Maine scoring over the course of the third and fourth quarters.
Carter Peevy went 16-26 for 159 yards passing in the loss for Maine. Martin had 11 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown, while Montigo Moss made seven receptions for 53 yards to lead the receiving core. Shakur Smalls had 10 total tackles on defense. Robertson, who played the previous four years in Orono, had a nice homecoming completing 22-36 for 390 yards and four touchdown for Monmouth. Nelson attempted 14 runs for 91 yards and a TD, with Ntoh also getting into the endzone twice. Derry made seven catches for a career-high 227 yards and two touchdowns, while Justin Bennin had seven tackles to anchor the Hawks defense. The visitors put up a total of 632 yards of offense (390 passing, 242 rushing) and converted 11 of 15 on third down opportunities in winning the conference opener in convincing fashion. Maine (1-2, 0-1 CAA) is back in non-conference play next Saturday as they travel to North Andover, Massachusetts to battle the Merrimack College Warriors (FCS Independent). Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
