Blauenfeldt, Gallego spark Maine women's basketball to a win over UNH

Asta Blauenfeldt and Paula Gallego both scored in double figures Thursday night, as Maine held off UNH 62-48 in America East women's basketball action on Skip Chappelle Court at Memorial Gymnasium in Orono. It was the final home game of the regular season for the Black Bears.

Maine shot a blistering 56% from the field in the first half and led by as many as 16, taking a 34-18 advantage to the halftime break. UNH fought back as the Black Bears only shot 30% in the third period, outscoring the hosts 18-7 to cut it to 41-36 heading into the final 10 minutes. The Wildcats were still within six with 7:20 to play, before Maine used a run of 11-4 to put it away. The victory also gives head coach Amy Vachon the most wins in program history, surpassing  Joanne Palombo-McCallie with 168.

Blauenfeldt had a team-high 18 points (4-8 three-pointers) in the win, also adding two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Gallego had 13 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Sera Hodgson, Caroline Bornemann, and Olivia Rockwood contributed eight points a piece. Bornemann also chipped in 10 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Eva DeChent had a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds for UNH in the loss. The Wildcats will now get ready for postseason as they end their regular season at 10-19 and 4-12 in America East.

Tynes, Lopez, Burns help Maine men's basketball end three game losing streak

Kellen Tynes, AJ Lopez, and Quion Burns all scored in double figures on Thursday night as Maine ended a three game losing streak by topping UNH 73-66 in America East men's basketball action at Lundholm Gymnasium in Durham, New Hampshire.

UNH held the lead several times in the first half as did Maine, but neither team had more than a three point edge until the Black Bears made a run of 11-2 over the final 4:31. Christopher Mantis made a three-pointer, Jaden Clayton nailed a jumper, and Lopez buried a three-pointer and completed a three-point play during the spurt to give the guests the lead for good 38-30 at the break. Maine took their biggest lead of the night on another three-pointer by Lopez at 56-44 with 11:45 left to play, but the pesky Wildcats wouldn't go away using a run of their own of 18-10 in cutting their deficit all the way down to 66-62 with 1:22 remaining. A three-pointer by Tynes and a homerun inbound pass for a layup by Quion Burns would seal it in the final minute for the Black Bears.

Tynes led the way in the win with 16 points (3-4 three-pointers), also adding seven rebounds and five assists. Lopez finished with 15 points, while Burns put in 13 points (3-5 three-pointers) and filled up the stat sheet with nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocked shots. Maine shot 52.2% from three-point range (12-23). Mantis (3-7 three-pointers) and Killian Gribben also contributed nine points a piece, with Mantis also hauling in six rebounds. Sami Pissis led all scorers with 24 points and five rebounds in the loss for UNH. The Wildcats fall to 8-22 and 6-9 in America East.

Maine is now 17-12 and 9-5 in conference play, and will return to Orono to play their final two regular season games starting with Bryant University on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Bulldogs handed the Black Bears an 81-55 setback in the America East opener in Rhode Island back on January 4th.

Makar records first career hat trick, as Maine men's hockey upends Vermont on Friday night

ORONO- With his parents in attendance on Friday night, senior forward Taylor Makar got Senior Weekend off to a great start as he netted his first career hat trick and #5 Maine defeated Vermont 4-1 in men's Hockey East action at Alfond Arena.

Makar scored his first of the night on the powerplay at 19:14 of the first period, off a terrific pass from Frank Djurasevic for a 1-0 Maine lead. Vermont had a great opportunity to tie it or take the lead as they had a 5 on 3 powerplay for a 1:21 in the second. The Black Bears though did a great job to kill that off, and minutes later got a 5 on 3 of their own that they cashed in on to double their advantage. A shot from the high center point by Djurasevic went off the leg of Makar and into the net at 10:01 for the eventual game winner to make it 2-0. The Catamounts did cut into the deficit after Charlie Russell took a goaltender interference penalty in the third period. Isak Walther put the guests on the board with a powerplay tally at 9:04. Makar completed his three goal night just over two minutes later, slamming home a rebound after a pad save on a shot by Brandon Chabrier at 11:10. Just 1:31 later at 12:41, Grayson Arnott also scored on a rebound for his second goal of the season to put it

Makar led all point getters in the Maine win with his three goal performance. Makar now has scored 10 goals in the last nine games (16 on the season), and the two powerplay goals are the first two of the year in the extra man situation. Djurasevic had two assists, while Oskar Komarov, Nicholas Niemo, Nolan Renwick, Josh Nadeau, Chabrier, and Russell had one each. Albin Boija made 26 saves, and the Black Bears went 2-5 on the powerplay. They have now gone 4 for their last 7 on the extra man in their last two games, after the 0-31 slump over the nine games previous to that. Simon Jellus and Sebastian Tornqvist had an assist each on the goal by Waltham in the loss for Vermont. The Catamounts went 1-6 on the powerplay, and Axel Mangbo stopped 34 shots. UVM is now 11-17-3 and 6-13-2 in Hockey East. Maine (20-6-5, 12-4-5) will battle Vermont again to finish off the regular season home schedule on Senior Night on Saturday. Face-off is set for 7 p.m.
