UMPI baseball hits two grandslams and sweeps Lehman College in New York to improve to 3-1 in the early season
The University of Maine-Presque Isle baseball team swept a doubleheader on Sunday over Lehman College in the Bronx, New York by scores of 9-2 and 16-14. This comes after the Owls split a season opening doubleheader with the University of Maine-Augusta on Saturday in Massachusetts. The game one 10-2 victory Saturday over the Moose was the first season opening win for UMPI since 1997.
On Sunday in game one- UMPI rolled by breaking it open with five runs in the fifth inning that included a grandslam from sophomore Michael Lang (Presque Isle High School). Anthony Searels, Gabriel Wheeler, and Dylan Geren also drove in a run each. Garrett Chadwick (1-0) got the win on the mound going the distance allowing one earned run on eight hits with one walk and six strikeouts. In game two- UMPI rallied from five runs down three times (9-4, 10-5, 13-8), and scored four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to capture the comeback victory. The freshman Wheeler hit the second grandslam of the day for the Owls, which was the game winner in their last at bat. Wheeler had four hits and seven RBI, Geren had three hits and an RBI, while Chadwick, Hector Perez, and Sam Bay (John Bapst) had two hits each. Chadwick also knocked in two runs, while Lang had another homerun (solo shot). UMPI (3-1) used five different pitchers with Jonah Baude (Bangor High) moving to 2-0 by picking up the win in relief. Spencer Harman recorded his first save. The Owls play a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Cobleskill on Wednesday.
