“Caleb Varnum never let obstacles get in the way or being part of the Bucksport football family. Caleb has football in his heart. He played his freshman year through the pain. Scoliosis with 60 degree curve took him out after a full thoracic spinal fusion. But that didn’t stop him from being a part of the team with the Bucks football family. He spent the next 3 years being a very important part of the team, filming the games. Caleb, congratulations and good luck going forward. You are an inspiration and role model.”

“David Gross had an outstanding high school athletic career. Gross led the Bucksport Bucks to the Class D North regional football championship this past fall. Gross was a two time state wrestling champion despite missing his senior season due to knee surgery. David has committed to the University of Maine and will play football for the Black Bears. It was a pleasure covering you and your teams for the last 4 years. Looking forward to seeing you succeed at UMaine. Congratulations and good luck.”

“Jocelyn Tozier another senior from Bucksport high school that deserves to be mentioned. Jocelyn was a dedicated manager for the Bucks football team the last four seasons. On September 7th, 2019, Tozier suffered serious injuries from a car accident. Jocelyn was in the hospital the week of the Bucksport homecoming game, but that didn’t stop her from talking to the team via FaceTime during the week. The Bucks went on to play one of their best games of the season in a homecoming win. The Bucks were always 100% with Jocelyn through their run to the Northern Maine championship. Below is Jocelyn with the other seniors on the Bucksport roster.”

The Following Student/athletes from Dexter high school will miss there final baseball season. But that doesn’t mean there coach Chad Graffam will ever forget them.

Junne Robertson-McIntire won 8 state titles and broke 7 school records in her four years at Belfast high school. Along with Robertson-Mcintire’s outstanding track career she also participated in basketball, soccer, and wrestling at Belfast. Junne you represented your family, school, and community tremendously. You will be missed. Congrats on an amazing high school career and graduation. Good luck on the journey of life that is just beginning.

It is not often a group of five seniors has the success that this Searsport baseball group had. The Vikings went 45-13 overall. 2 State Championships, and 3 PVC Championships since the group of Colby Snow, Dylan O’Brien, Daegan Moody, Steven Perkins, and Spencer Philbrook were freshmen. These five young men have made a lasting impact on the Vikings program. You are great leaders and role models for the Searsport youth. Congratulations on everything you accomplished and on your graduation. Good luck in the journey of life.

Jenna Keach has been the pitcher and Abby Stemp the catcher since the 6th grade, including three years for the Searsport Vikings softball team. You not being able to be out there for your senior season doesn’t change the impact you have made on the Searsport program. Your dedication to the game of softball will never be forgotten. You made your school, community, and family proud.

Coach Christin Chase said the following

“My heart breaks for these two senior softball players and knowing they will not be able to participate in their senior season. They have both worked so very hard to become the inseparable pitcher/catcher team that they are. (Working together since 6th grade!) These ladies are strong, whole hearted women that I know will embrace their future endeavors. Thank you Abby and Jenna for your love and participation in the game. Our team would not be where it is today without your loyalty and leadership. We love you and you will never be forgotten!

Forever bleed blue & Go Vikings! 💙🥎”

– Coach Christin, Coach Sharon, & Coach Greg

Congrats to Damyan Greenlaw of Brewer High school. Greenlaw was on the Witches track and football team. Unfortunately Greenlaw will be missing his senior season for outdoor track. The senior was named to the Lobster Bowl team and the hope is that game will go on as scheduled in July. Either way, you keep your head up high Damyan. Your accomplishments haven’t gone unnoticed. Your family and school are proud of you.

Riley Clough, Amber Sherwood, and Cammi King will continue their schooling and basketball careers together. The Fort Fairfield trio of seniors will all be going to the University of Maine at Presque Isle starting in the fall. The Tigers captains will get to stay close to home while playing for Coach Gavin Kane at UMPI. These three provided leadership while having success on and off the court at Fort Fairfield.

Kane said in a UMPI press release- “One of my goals has been to really encourage athletes from the County to stay right here where they can get a tremendous college education. I am thrilled that Riley, Amber and Cammi will be attending UMPI and joining our Basketball Program. I have seen all three of them play multiple times over the past 3 seasons and they will each bring their own strengths to our team. They have played in an outstanding program at Ft. Fairfield under Coach Gardner and I very much look forward to working with them.”

Congratulations to all three of you on a successful high school career. Good luck in the next chapter. You have been and continue to be great role models for the younger kids in the Fort Fairfield community.

Dawson Watson, Wyatt Keegan, Chase Griffeth, Colby Langner and Grayden Griffeth will be very much missed at Fort Fairfield high school. The five seniors put their heart and soul into sports and wore that Tigers uniform with pride. Was always a hard working group when we got the opportunity to cover your games at Bangor. Congratulations on graduating and making the impact you did on your school. You made your community and family proud. Keep your head up and tackle the adult world like you did your high school career. With a positive attitude and with pride.

Orono high school won the 2019 Northern Maine boys tennis championship. The senior group of Alex Brown, Itai Boss, Sam Henderson, and Patrick Tyne were excited to defend their regional championship. Congratulations to these four seniors on incredible athletic high school careers representing the Red Riots in soccer, cross country, golf, hockey, swimming, indoor track, outdoor track, baseball, and tennis. You didn’t get to defend your title on the court but you all should hold your head high because you are graduating champions on and off the court. Good luck in the next chapter.

The following 10 student/athletes will never be forgotten at Deer Isle-Stonington.
Softball/Baseball; Brittany Gray, Brienna Limeburner, Ella Marshall, Katie Hutchinson, Thomas Hutchinson, and Jacob Sadler
Tennis; Marissa Judkins, Mason Plummer, Benjamin Penfold, Ian Cust

You may have had your final sports season taken away from you but that doesn’t take away the impact you had on your school and community. Your family is proud of you. Keep your head high. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the adult world.

Colby Hewitt is the only senior student/athlete at Washburn high school. When you talk about multi sport athlete, Hewitt’s name has to be at the top of the list. Hewitt participated in soccer, Cross country, basketball, baseball, and Volleyball for the Beavers. Congratulations on graduating and good luck moving forward in the adult world. You will be missed at Washburn.

Karl Ilvonen, Jonah Carlson, and Caleb Powell. Were going to be the senior leaders on the Oceanside baseball team this season. That opportunity was taken away but the doesn’t take away that they gave the program throughout the years. IIvonen and Carlson were enter their third season on varsity for Coach Don Shields and the Mariners. Powell was entering his second season. Shields said the following about his senior trip.

“Karl was a catcher but moved to mound and utility last year. A kid who is willing to what it takes to win. Great baseball smarts. Loves to talk the game. Will be a coach in the future.”

“Jonah is quiet but was solid off our bench 2 years ago. One of our top hitters last year. Would have been a real key to our success this year. A pitch to contact pitcher led us in innings last year but really go hurt by team mistakes. A young man you love to coach.”

“Caleb is a natural hitter and I think he was going to have a great year. He is one of those kids that it clicks when he becomes a senior. He would have hit 5th for us.”

Congratulations on your graduation and knock the adult world out of the park.

Mackenzie Campbell is the lone senior on the Woodland high school softball team. She has represented herself on and off the field with pride and dignity.

“Mackenzie has worked very hard with determination and self discipline throughout her softball career. She was a role model on the field and represented her School, Community, teammates and family with the utmost respect. Congratulations Mackenzie on an outstanding High School Career.”

Mackenzie you make your family, school, and community proud. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the adult world. You will do great and whatever comes your way.

Josh Smith and Jacob Thibodeau were the only two seniors that were going to be on the Central high school baseball team this season. Smith was a spark plug and won the coaches award for all 3 sports he participated in his junior year. Central coach Pete Speed said, “A kid that any coach is lucky to know and have.”

Thibodeau would have been a 3 year starter. He was an All Conference 1st team centerfielder and was named to the underclassmen all star game as a junior.
Speed said, “Great kid that gave me everything he had. Played hurt and played hard.”

Speed added, “both of these guys were exactly what coaches want their players to be. Selfless, respectful, and accountable. I’m gonna miss the opportunity to see them off and I know for a fact that their teammates are going to miss them as well. feels so terrible for not just my seniors but for all the seniors that have been cut short. “

Josh and Jacob you made an impact on your school and community proud. Your family is proud of you. Your journey is just beginning and you will do great just as you did at Central high school on and off the field.

Caitlyn Hardy, Cloe Mountain, and Regan McNally were all key contributors in many ways in their time at Dexter high school. The trio was hoping for an opportunity to defend their regional softball championship this spring.

Tigers softball coach Jason Hardy said the following about his senior leaders.

“I feel such disappointment for all the athletes and coaches across the state, but especially the seniors. We had 3 Seniors on our roster this Spring and they will be greatly missed. To see their high school softball careers cut short is absolutely heart breaking. Caitlyn Hardy, Cloe Mountain and Regan McNally have been so dedicated to the sport and our program. Each was a three year starter. They were great leaders, teammates, and key contributors to our programs recent success. I know they’ve been anxiously looking forward to the opportunity of getting on the field to defend last years Northern Maine Championship. They were looking forward to leading our team as the captains they’ve earned to be and to compete for the last time in a Dexter uniform. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to be their coach over the years. They represented their family, school and community tremendously and I’m beyond proud of them.”

Caitlyn, Cloe, and Regan you all are well respected at your school and community. Your family is very proud of you. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the adult world. You will ace anything that gets in your way just like you did in your high school career.

Alfie Griffin from Central high school is a 3 sport senior athlete. He was on the Varsity soccer team and was on the indoor and outdoor track teams. This year during indoor track he was PVC champion in the 400, PVC runner up in the 200, and his 4X200 relay team was PVC runners up. He is all academic athlete and was awarded the Anne Norton Sportsmanship award, and the team itself also won the sportsmanship award. He placed 3rd at states in the 400 as well.

Congratulations on graduating and on all your accomplishments at Central. You will not be forgotten. You made your school, family, and community proud. It may feel like this is the end of the journey but this is just the beginning and you will also be a star in the adult world.

Brayden Lujan, Malcolm Slomienski, Scott Dorn, Branden Oliver, Cody Hanscom, Griffin Coburn, and Jackson Weatherbee all enjoyed their senior basketball season at Mattanawcook Academy. Slomienski, Dorn, Hanscom, and Weatherbee were hoping to play their final high school baseball season, while Oliver and Coburn were preparing for the tennis season.

This group has put their heart into being part of the Mattanawcook teams over the last 4 years. Your school, family, and the Lincoln community are proud of you. Congratulations on graduating and good luck as you take that step into the adult world.

When Central high school needed someone to step in, Alyssa Day was the person they called. Day played full back for the soccer team until the starting goalie got injured, Day stepped in as keeper for the Red Devils. Day played third base her first two seasons of playing high school softball. This was going to be her second season as catcher for Central. She is on national honor society and plans to attend Husson in the fall for physical therapy. Day was PVC academic for soccer this year and received the coaches award. Alyssa you excelled in the classroom and on the athletic fields. Your entire community is proud of you. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the adult world.

The Penobscot Valley high school Howlers have built quite the tradition in girls sports. A huge part of the reason is this senior class. Lexi Ireland and Leine McKechnie the best of friends off the court and the best of players on the court and fields in Howland.

Below is what the duo accomplished while playing for the Howlers.

*Both girls played all three sports. Soccer, basketball, softball.

*5 Northern Maine Championships
*2 state runners up
* 2 State Championships
* 1 Northern Maine runner-ups

* 3 retired jerseys (2 Lexi and 1 Leine)
* 4 new school records (2 Lexi and 2 Leine)
* A Miss Maine Finalist (Ireland) and a Maine Gatorade player of the Year finalist (McKechnie)
4 year win/lose record
Soccer- 53-5-1
Basketball- 50-30
Softball- 58-2
Overall a 161-37-1 record
Leine DII SNHU softball
Lexi UMPI basketball and soccer

PVHS girls soccer coach Ryan Reed said

“There probably isn’t a pair of classmates more hard working and committed to win than Lexi and Leine. I will always remember the tenacity that Leine displayed on the defensive side of the ball, shutting down the opposing team’s best player in the big games. Lexi controlled the other end of the field, proving to be the most prolific scorer in PVHS history with 124 goals. That accomplishment is a record that could stand the test of time. Two of the most coachable kids you will ever meet, I am so happy that these girls capped their senior year off with a Northern Maine Championship.”

Howlers girls basketball coach Nate Case said,

“For any program to be successful, the leaders have to have the best effort. These two (Ireland and McKechnie) were always the example of effort we needed to play at an elite level in Class C North Basketball. Leine who didn’t necessarily love basketball, but loves to compete so really could find love for the game. We related and connected a great deal because we’re both competitively driven. Her passion & determination will allow her to be successful at anything she sets her mind and heart to.

“Lexi has been incredible at everything she does, but when you sit down & say “what skill exactly is Lexi good at?”… it’s hard to pinpoint because it’s just simply she will do whatever the team needs to win. I don’t know how many nights I came home and said “Jeez, that was a quiet 23 and 14 boards”. You know if kids can take anything from Lexi, I hope it’s that the desire the work your hardest in whatever you do, the ball just seems to find you. I love these two girls like they’re my own, I trust their play to best represent me as a coach, I know they’re always going to “lock in” when it’s time and we’ll share laughs together when it’s time. We’ve built a winning program and family culture thanks to those girls.”

While McKechnie and Ireland got most of the press they got plenty of help from their friends to reach their personal and team goals.

The following student/athletes made their mark at PVHS.

Jaiden Dennison put her heart and soul into basketball over the years. She is a hard worker on and off the court and she is my niece. Congratulations on graduating and your commitment to St. Joseph’s college. Good luck in your pursuit of a nursing degree. Your family is proud of you.

Maddie Grant, Grace Johnson, Sydney Lorom, Abbie Worthley, Amelia Ivey, Samantha Condon, Elizabeth Philips, Sierra Hoops, and Addie Gilpatrick all made a positive impact at Houlton high school. Your community, school, and families are proud. Congratulations on graduating and good luck as you head off to the adult world.

Seniors Lauria LeBlanc, Emily Edgerly and Katie Worthen are three sport Varsity starters for the Lady Bulldogs in Madison. They were put into tough positions freshman year in Soccer, Basketball and Softball. These three incredible athletes helped their teams capture a Runner-up state title in Soccer in 2017, made it deep in the playoffs during their basketball career and played instrumental roles in Softball. Emily & Katie protected the outfield while Lauria dominated in the circle. In 2018 as young sophomores, all three had key accomplishments in their undefeated season, including Emily’s fly-ball triple and Lauria’s relentless left hand took no mercy with 14 strikeouts and retiring 15 consecutive hitters to secure the 2018 gold glove in the State Championship softball game. In 2019, losing their entire starting lineup to graduation, these three continued to press on with their leadership and Bulldog mentality. They mentored new key players and continued to show that the Lady Bulldogs would remain on top winning back to back state championships. Their career softball record is: 57 wins, 3 losses in three years with 3 MVC Championships, 3 Regional titles, 1 State Championship Runner up and 2 Class C State Championships. Lauria was nominated for MS player of the year in 2019.

Lauria, Emily, and Katie you dominated on the field and made your family, school, and community proud of your accomplishments on and off the field. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the next part of the journey.

Madelyn Nida (left) & Syra Gutow (center) – Seniors from Ellsworth High School and George Stevens Academy have been doing gymnastics for 15 and 12 years, respectively at Springers Gymnastics Center in Ellsworth. Photographed with 2019 Narraguagus graduate Kajsa Brown-Morrison.

“Gymnastics is a year round sport; one that teaches you to get back up when you fall. These girls put in anywhere between 9-18 hours a week of practice while competing from December – May in the YMCA and USA Gymnastics league, traveling all over New England. These girls have also shown a love for coaching and are looked up to and admired by many young gymnasts. Through bruises, rips and torn muscles, they’ve stuck together and earned a number of state and regional titles. I want to congratulate you all on accomplishing what very few gymnasts can; making it to senior year. I’m sorry that the end of your journey was cut short but I have no doubt that you girls will take your lessons learned in the gym and carry them through your life. You should be very proud of who you are and how far you’ve come. I know I am.”

Love, your older and forever gym sister, Alicia

Madelyn and Syra- your hard work has not gone unnoticed. You are the perfect role models for young gymnasts all around the area. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in your journey into adulthood.

Claire Thompson, Amelia Slocum, Emma Heath and Kaylee Perkins were the seniors on the Bangor girls Lacrosse team. You have helped build the program and whatever comes down the road for the Rams you will be remembered for your commitment.

“Claire Thompson, Amelia Slocum, Emma Heath and Kaylee Perkins – you have all made tremendous impacts on the Bangor Girls Lacrosse program. We thank you for your dedication and commitment to get better each and every day. Your incredible leadership has set our young program up for success in the years to come. Your work ethic and ability to make us all laugh when we needed it most never went unnoticed. As you each move on to the next chapter in your story, remember that you’ll always have a home as a Ram.”

Claire, Amelia, Emma, and Kaylee you all not only were leaders, you were literally program builders. You will always be adults to look up to for the current and future girls Lacrosse players. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the journey of adulthood.

Jacob Cardelli is the only senior on the Dexter boys tennis team. Cardelli worked his way up to #1 on the team.

Tigers Coach Peter Murray said, “Jacob is a hard worker who has risen from second doubles to #1 on our team. My heart aches that he won’t have the chance to compete his senior season.”

Jacob you are a perfect example of hard work paying off. You made your coaching staff and family proud. Congratulations on graduating and good luck in the Adult World.

The senior class at Penobscot Valley High School certainly made a positive impact in their time at the school. The following student/athletes performed on the field/court and in the classroom while at PVHS.

Reece Carter (soccer, basketball, baseball), Zach Doore (soccer, basketball, baseball), Zeke Hayes (soccer, track w/ MA), Joe Tuulima (wrestling, football w/ MA), Brandon Smart (manager for soccer, basketball, baseball), Codi Fanning (wrestling), Matt Dourant (Golf, basketball manager).

Howlers basketball and soccer Coach Jeremy Durost said the following

“I’ve had the privilege of coaching Reece Carter and Zach Doore a combined 13 varsity seasons between basketball and soccer. Not only were both of them 3-sport athletes, but they were named team captain in all three sports. Reece is a fiery competitor, a vocal leader, and a hard worker. Zach is energetic, hard working, and always comes in with a great attitude. They always complimented each other extremely well. With the help of their skill and leadership, every team that they played on was competitive. PVHS athletics will miss them greatly next year!”

PVHS baseball Coach Ryan Lincoln said the following about the student/athletes on the baseball team.

Reece Carter- “Couldn’t ask for a better team player, would run thru a wall for you. Reece was our everyday shortstop, while being slotted as our #2 on the bump the last 2 years. Replacing a player like Reece is few and far between. One of the best situational/heads up players I’ve coached. Being a general and taking charge on the diamond, while keeping the gel together was a huge piece of his talents. The passion for baseball and drive to succeed was incredible. Reece will be missed on and off the field.”

Zach Doore- “The lefty that I always called “My Changeup”. On the bump his precision to hit spots and keep hitters of balance was incredible. Zach found a strong role patrolling Left Field for 3 years and was a vacuum from day one. Trying to replace a guy that could swipe almost any base and bunt for a single in any situation will be incredibly tough.”

Matt Dourant- “Matt only played one season for us, but a huge team player and knew his role. Matt was always trying to find opportunities to improve and how to help the team. Even tho Matt didn’t see a lot of field time his presence on the team was great to have. Matt will be very successful in his college education pursuit.”

Brandon Smart(Manager)- “Every team always needs that one chemistry guy. Brandon was the glue guy. Attending all games he was able to he was very supportive and kept everyone’s heads focused to the game. No matter what you could always rely on his humorous personality to keep us on our toes. Your hard pressed to find a kid that’ll put a smile on anyways face and brighten the dugout like Brandon.”

JB Tuulima- “JB played his freshman season and then became a manager for the last two. As us coaches know having managers takes a lot of weight off our shoulders. JB took care of the book and lineup card for 2 seasons. The ability to show up to the field and focus on pregame warmups was a huge help. JB brought laughter to the dugout and his book keeping abilities were stellar. JB had an incredible wrestling career and was able to spend his springs on the diamond.”

Rene Roy coached the Howlers soccer team in the 2019 season. He had this to say about Zeke.

“Zeke came into his senior soccer season after missing previous seasons and stepped into a starting varsity role. He was a big part of the teams success with his speed and work ethic. Zeke kept many defenders on their toes which allowed room for our midfielders. Zeke’s performance in our quarter final game last fall helped helped advanced his team to the next round.”

Reece, Zach, Zeke, Joe, Brandon, Cody, and Matt congratulations on graduating and good luck in the adult world. Your family, school, and community are proud of you all.

Kiesha Scott, Halle Sullivan, and Cassidee Lawrence have represented Shead high school with pride the last four years. The trio played basketball, soccer, and softball for the Tigerettes. Starting this fall, Kiesha will be attending University of Maine at Machias, Halle will be attending University of Maine at Augusta, while Cassidee will be going to Maine Maritime Academy.

Cambria, Hannah, Jordyn, Morgan, and Rowan your commitment to a sport you loved didn’t go unnoticed. This group had three successful years for Coach Don Stanhope. The Rams made the Class A semifinals two of the three years and were expecting to be contenders in 2020.

March 14, 2018
No Comments

Ryan Reed and his family have done a lot to help those in need while receiving cancer treatment. On Thursday night, the PVC coaches will play in their fifth Coaches VS Cancer game in the last four years. Games have been played in Milo, Guilford, Bucksport, and Dexter. On Thursday the coaches in the conference will play at Howland with all proceeds going to the family of Reed, who is the Varsity girls soccer coach at Penobscot Valley High School.

In December 2017, Reed was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. Ryan recently had surgery in Boston and has made multiple trips to Massachusetts for treatments. All proceeds from the event on Thursday will go to Ryan and his family to help with the costs during this trying time. Modern Woodmen will match all donations up to $2500.

Ryan’s family has been hit hard by cancer over the years. Reed and his family created “The Reed foundation” to help local families in need, that are struggling with cancer.

Ryan’s cousin Marisa LeBlanc has been a key contributor to the Reed Foundation, as well as to the upcoming event, spearheading a lot of the planning and collecting donations for the raffles.

Ryan is a 1992 graduate from PVHS, where he was a 3 sport athlete (Soccer, basketball, baseball).  He went on to excel at soccer at Maine Maritime Academy.  Ryan went on to follow in his father’s footsteps, Sonny Reed, who coached soccer at Penobscot Valley for years.  Ryan’s girls teams are consistently among the top teams in class D each year. He has a wife Gretchen, and 3 children (Taryn, Lauren, and Nick).

There will be several raffles, concessions, baked goods, and t shirts for sale. At least 25 coaches from the PVC have committed to the event.
