Four state of Maine small colleges to compete in the USCAA National Tournament

The state of Maine will be well represented once again on the small college basketball level later this week and into next week. The Southern Maine Community College Seawolves (SMCC) men’s and women’s teams, the University of Maine-Fort Kent men and women, along with women’s teams from Central Maine Community College (CMCC) and the University of Maine-Augusta will all head South to Virginia and compete in the USCAA National Tournament.

The University of Maine-Fort Kent women (12-9) will take on Salem University (Mass.) on Sunday at 3 p.m. in a USCAA Division I quarterfinal in Petersburg, Virginia, while the Bengals men’s team (10-15) plays Apprentice School (VA, 22-5) to follow on Sunday at 5. In Division II, the SMCC men’s and women’s teams both take part in a play-in round game. The Seawolves women will take on Five Towns College (NY) on Sunday in Petersburg at 11 a.m. SMCC (20-8) has had a solid season, falling to the University of Maine-Augusta 67-60 in the Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) semifinals. Five Towns College (12-6) captured the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament by winning the championship game over Berkeley 75-51. The SMCC men will face Penn State Wilkes-Barre (PA) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in their play-in game. The Seawolves are 21-7, falling in the YSCAA semifinals 65-55 to Central Maine Community College. The Mountain Lions of Penn State Wilkes-Barre enter the tourney with a record of 17-8. The Central Maine Community College women earned a #3 national seed, and is set to battle Miami (Ohio)-Hamilton on Monday night at 8 p.m. in a quarterfinal. The Mustangs (27-1) have a 21 game win streak, and have had six contests this season scoring 100 or more points. CMCC won the YSCC Tournament by defeating the University of Maine-Augusta 59-52 in the title game. The conference runner-up the University of Maine-Augusta is also back in the field. The Moose (21-6), led by YSCC Coach of the Year Heath Cowan, battles against the University of Cincinnati-Clermont also on Monday in Petersburg at 4 p.m.

The Central Maine Community College women look for their fourth national title (2017, 2019, 2022), while the Southern Maine Community College men also have a national crown when it comes to state of Maine teams after they won it all in 2022.

CMCC men’s and women’s soccer headed to USCAA National Tournament in Pennsylvania

The Central Maine Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams have had an outstanding fall, and with both winning the Yankee Small College Conference postseason tournament they are headed to the USCAA Division II National Tournament at Montour Junction Sports Complex in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania.

The CMCC women’s soccer team (11-4-1) won their first YSCC regular season title and postseason title in school history, and will be making their first national appearance on Friday. The Mustangs have been led by sophomore forward Natalie Tracy (Messalonskee High). Tracy has registered 22 goals and three assists for 47 points. Junior Lakyn Hink (Sacopee Valley) has added 11 goals and five assists for 27 points. In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Emma Knowles (Kents Hill) has started 12 of the 16 games with a 2.47 goals against average and an .850 save percentage with three shutouts. CMCC faces the University of Cincinnati-Claremont in the opening round of pool play on Friday at 6:15 p.m.

The CMCC men’s soccer team (12-2-1) punched their ticket to the National Tournament for a second straight year when they defeated SMCC 4-1 in the YSCC Championship game on November 5. The Mustangs, who are scoring 5.3 goals per game, are led by sophomore forward Ivan Domingues (Hyde High School) who has 26 goals and 11 assists for 63 points. His brother and sophomore Igor Domingues (Lewiston High) has added 35 points with 14 goals and seven assists. Freshmen David Nzuzi (Brunswick High) and Ordi Bimvy have each contributed 21 points. Sophomore goalkeeper Arnaud Nyagasaza (Portland, Maine) has started 10 games and has a 1.08 goals against average and a save percentage of .841. CMCC takes on the loser of Johnson & Wales and Five Towns College in their opener of pool play on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The men’s and women’s USCAA National Soccer Tournament consists of pool play, broken up into Pool A and Pool B. The two winners of each pool will meet in the National Championship game on Monday. The men’s title game would be at 1 p.m., with the women’s to follow at 5.

Cole Martin from UMaine-Augusta wins USCAA National Championship in pole vault

Sophomore Cole Martin from the University of Maine-Augusta capped off a fantastic sophomore season on Friday in the USCAA National Championship of indoor track and field.

Martin won the USCAA National Championship in pole vaulting in the event that was held at American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts. Martin also won the Yankee Small College Conference Championship in the pole vault. A native of New Jersey, Martin back in February set a school record reaching 3.80 m (12′ 5.5″) in a meet in Boston.

UMA women’s basketball wins third straight game

The University of Maine-Augusta women’s basketball team overcame a slow start and a six point halftime deficit Wednesday evening, for a 57-54 win over Thomas College in a non-conference game at the Augusta Civic Center.

Thomas College (1-7) led the entire first half and held a 25-19 advantage at the break. UMA started the game by shooting just 2-17 from the floor in the opening quarter. A layup by Madeline Suhr with 6:03 left in the third quarter gave the Moose their first lead of the night. Lindsay Given would give the Terriers their last lead 41-39 with 9:25 left to play with a three-pointer. A three point play by Kaeti Butterfield 1:24 later pushed the hosts back in front for good for their third straight win.

Suhr led the University of Maine-Augusta with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and six blocks. Hope Butler added 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Chantel Ouellette and Samantha Fortin had 11 points each for Thomas College. Fortin had nine rebounds, and Ouellette had six. The Moose, who upset CMCC the top team in the country in USCAA Division II on Monday, improve to 6-4 on the season and will play their last game before the Christmas break when they visit the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Friday.
