BANGOR– The George Stevens Eagles showed the heart of a champion when it mattered most in the Maine Principals’ Association class C boys state championship game on Saturday evening. The Eagles defeated Winthrop 47-44 to earn their second consecutive state title.
The Eagles were down by six with 1:55 remaining in the fourth quarter. Taylor Schildroth hit consecutive three pointers in a 30 second span to even the score at 42 with 1:25 remaining.
Cam Wood gave the Ramblers a 44-42 lead with 1:05 remaining. Percy Zentz made two free throws to even the score at 44 with 47.4 seconds remaining. After a Winthrop turnover, Jarrod Chase drained a three pointer with 1.4 seconds left it give the Eagles a dramatic title victory.
Schildroth led the Eagles with 21 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Chase scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Stefan Simmons scored six points and pulled down six rebounds. George Stevens finished the season with a 22-0 record.
Jacob Hickey led the Ramblers with 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Garrett Tsouprake recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Wood scored 10 points and had nine rebound. Winthrop finishes the season with a 21-1 record.
