Monmouth defeats Dexter to win first girls basketball state championship in school history

DEXTER– The Monmouth Mustangs defeated Dexter 46-37 on Saturday evening at the Cross Insurance Center in the Maine Principals’ Association class C state championship game. It is the first state title for the Monmouth girls basketball program.

Monmouth held a 16-13 halftime lead. Megan Peach scored the first four points of the third quarter to give the Tigers a 17-16 lead. Hannah Anderson made her first basket when she sunk a three pointer to give the Mustangs a 19-17 lead with 4:16 remaining in the quarter.

After Peach evened the score at 19, Tia Day sank a three pointer to give Monmouth a lead (22-19) that they wouldn’t give back with 3:10 left in the third quarter. Monmouth shot 17-24 from the free throw line, including 11-15 in the fourth quarter to secure the title.

Abbey Allen scored 16 points to lead the way for the Mustangs. Day added 13 points (3 three pointers). Anderson put in six points, while Abby Ferland and Kaeti Butterfield scored four points each. Monmouth finished their memorable season with a 20-3 record.

Peach led the Tigers with 20 points (16 in second half), 11 rebounds, and six blocks. Kayli Cunningham chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds. Becca Batron came off the bench to put in six points. Dexter finishes the season with a 16-7 record.
