Dexter football wins overtime thriller over Foxcroft

DEXTER– Tyler Chapman started the fourth quarter with a 55 yard touchdown run. Chapman ended the game with an interception in overtime that sealed a 27-21 Dexter Tigers victory over Foxcroft on Saturday afternoon.

The Ponies started quickly with a 7 minute/12 play drive that ended in a six yard touchdown run from Caden Crocker. The big play during the drive was a fake punt that Logan Martin converted into a first down.

The Tigers responded quickly when Parker Ponte took the ball 80 yards on their first play from scrimmage. The Dexter defense stepped up and slowed down the Ponies offense the rest of the quarter. Dexter took a lead when Cameron Paige scooted into the end zone with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.

Foxcroft scored two touchdowns in the final 55 seconds of the first half the first came when Austin Seavey connected with Martin on an eight yard touchdown. Dexter had the ball with a chance to run down the clock but they threw it three consecutive times, the final one ended in the hands of Lucas Ames of the Ponies. Martin ran into the end zone from two yards out as time expired in the half. Luke Stedman kicked the extra point to send Foxcroft into halftime with a 21-14 lead.

The Tigers defense came up big in the second half, holding a dynamic Foxcroft offense scoreless. Parker Richardson led the way with three sacks. On the offensive side of things, Chapman took the hand off on the first play from scrimmage in the fourth quarter and took it into the end zone from 55 yards away. Gage Stone converted the extra point to even the score at 21. Thanks to solid defense from both teams the game would stay even through the end of regulation.

Dexter had the ball first in overtime and they marched the ball the needed 10 yards into the end zone capped by a Logan Perkins one yard touchdown run. Dexter thought they had the game won when a Foxcroft pass fell incomplete on fourth down. play continued due to a pass interference call. The next play was another throw into the end zone, this one went into the hands of Chapman and sent the Tigers to their first victory over Foxcroft in football since 1988.

Seavey threw for 177 yards and one touchdown on 16-30 passing. Logan Martin had seven catches for 82 yards and one touchdown. Martin also rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Foxcroft (3-3) will host Mattanawcook on October 18th.

Paige had 82 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries. Ponte had 88 yards rushing. Foxcroft had 294 total yards, while the Tigers had 281.  Dexter (5-1) will host Mount View on October 19th.
