Jackson Sutherland earns male athlete of the week

Each week during the high school sports season, Eastern Maine Sports will announce a female and male athlete of the week. If you want to sponsor the female or male athlete of the week email Marc at easternmainesports@gmail.com. Use that same email to send your nominations in during the week. When you send your nominations include the athlete, name of the school, stats for the week of the nomination. Here is a full list of the 363 past athlete of the week winners.

This week, we had five Rowell’s Garage male athlete of the week nomination. Jackson Sutherland earned his 150th career win and 100th pin in the same match. Sutherland joins  Chase Vicaire (1-1-12), Trysten Pelkey (2) (10-13-13), Courtney McIntyre (3) (5-23-15 ), Tia Tardy (3-8-14), Garrett Sutherland (11-2-14), Emily Page (5-22-17), Dominic Libbey (10-1-17), Alex Brown (10-14-18), Cayden Spencer-Thompson (6-3-19) and Brayden Lujan (10-21-19) as student/athletes from Mattanawcook Academy that have earned athlete of the week honors.


Male athlete of the week January 16th- January 22nd

  • Jackson Sutherland- Mattanawcook- wrestling- earned his 150th win and 100th pin in the same match at senior night.  He is the first one in his school to reach either of these milestones, and he has done it in three seasons due to missing his junior season due to Covid. He is currently undefeated in the state of Maine and his overall record is 151-4 with 2 losses his freshman year at New Englands in Providence, RI and 2 losses his sophomore year at New Englands in Methuen, MA. He’s nearing the end of an amazing high school career.

Runner up

  • Hunter Curtis- Ellsworth- basketball- had 33 points in 74-42 win over Hermon. Had 11 points and 10 assists in 76-34 win over John Bapst.

Other nominations 

  • Simon Allen- Central- basketball- had 26 points in 62-31 win over Penquis.
  • Will Kusnierz -Dexter – basketball- had 30 points (4-5 from 3 point range), five steals, and four blocked shots in 55-50 win over Searsport.
  • Cooper Flagg- Nokomis- basketball- had 30 points in 72-43 win over Brewer.
